And I'm not talking about glory holes. I mean, why even have the door if there's no privacy? And I hear it's the same in the ladies' washroom, not just the men's.

Sorry, I mean gaps between the doors of the stalls. As a guy, I'm not offended by it, but I worry about the older folks who want more privacy. For me, it's more of a weird sort of feeling passing motion in a stall and people can see me wiping my behind.

I know what you mean and it's not only limited to Queensland.
We have a similar arrangement at work in New South Wales where there is a slight gap between the door and stall frames. I find it fairly common in most public toilets.
What they should do is have a strip of aluminium on the outer edge of the stall frame which covers the gaps when the door is closed. It could just be pop riveted or glued on.

Here in the states, we have some restrooms with no doors on the stalls-especially parks. I guess the door gives a person the perception that they have privacy and a feeling of control in the space.

I'm not sure exactly what you are describing...? plus I've never been to Oz. In Holland many of the public toilets are unisex as are the changing rooms at the swimming pool (same in Denmark). As for the toliets there is an attendent ladies to the left gents to the right with a a row of urinals for men to pee in.
Nightclubs/pub loos are unisex as well. In Germany & Holland there are mixed suanas where people are naked. It doesn't bother continential Europeans

How big of a gap are you talking about?
Most public restrooms I've been in have this small gap on either side of the door. You don't see much though unless you're trying to look.

Probably because in Australia, all men pack HUGE hunting knives and you never know when one if going to quaff 10 Fosters Lager and go to the public loo to find someone to shanghai into hunting some crocs with. This wasy you can see them coming, prepare a falsetto voice and pretend you are gay. That is the best defense against an Aussie with a knife.

either to get some air when you drop a stink nugget or so they could watch you take a dump somewhere in japan its worse cause when you go to a portipoty you have to be careful cause theres a reality show where they lift the toilet up and the roof is taken off and every one sees you taking a ****
