Study about the life of Jesus Christ and follow his teachings. That is all that is required. You don't really need any particular church, although a good church couldn't hurt.
Also if your life is going so wrong, take a look at the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Even if you are not an alcoholic or addict the twelve steps are the best self-help program money can buy and they are readily available for free at www.aa.org

God can certainly help you. You do not have to be holy before God will 'hear' you. He wants you right where you are so that he can show you his power in your life.
Quite simply:
Believe in God the Father, that he sent his son Jesus to die for your sins, admit that you have sinned and need his help. Ask for his holy spirit. Buy a bible (New Living Translation is pretty good and easy to read) and start reading the new testament. Corithians is a good start. Ephesians is also good. The smaller books of the bible have some good stuff in it too.
There's nothing else special you have to do. The bible talks about being baptized which symbolizes your choice but I believe that what I said above is sufficient for salvation.
Just remember, your life doesn't have to be perfect. No one's life is perfect. No christian's life is perfect. Hopefully your friends don't portray it as such.
When you pray, just talk to God in the name of Jesus. Talk to him as if you were talking to your best friend. Tell him your hurts, your disappointments, your joy, your happiness, your goals. Just ask for him to help you and change your life.
As you read the bible and pray you will grow spiritually. Its not an overnight process. You won't instantly be perfect. But things will change. Just be willing for God to work in your life.
Simple huh?
If you feel led to go with your friends then go. If not, pray for guidance on what church to attend. I think you'd be more comfortable in a contemporary church.
* Update *
I guess the people on this board are going to give you a hard time about wanting to be a christian. You'll just have to ignore them and follow what you are being drawn to.

Your new Christians friends will be glad to help you to become one. A good start will be to attend church with them. The important thing is to believe that Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of your sins and to confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior and also declare that you believe in your heart God raised Jesus from the dead. After you accept Christ you will attend church to learn God's word, be baptized and get involved with church activities.

Hi, Tracy. I do not believe in any gods and I'm not here to suggest ways to join a religion. I just want to communicate that I care about you, like I do all good people, and I hope you don't get stuck believing in a lie. If a rational 'debate', for lack of a better term, would help you not 'become a christian', then please email me. My address is in my profile.
But yes, go to church with your friends and let them know that you are a little unsure about god, if that is the case. Just don't hang up your thinking cap.

Be careful which church you choose to go because there are "christian" churches that are governed by the wrong spirit.
Before you ever choose a church, make sure you have a relationship with Christ. Start with your present state, and ask in prayer God to show you your real state. He will point to the wickedness of your heart and it's filthiness testified by wrong deeds, and then, once when you are really touched by the presentation of your heart, repent and ask God to clean you and to remove all filthiness. Ask Him to enter in your heart and be ready to show your willingness by adopting every principle and doctrine of Bible which you will find by reading it. The final effect of your communion with God is your restoration, new life, Christ in you - and you transformed in the glory of God, having the character traits of God.
And then, test the churches by what is written in Bible.

Don't listen to the posters that are giving you stupid answers...
Here is the roadmap to becoming a Christian
Hear God's Word
Believe the Word
Admit you are a sinner ( you don't have to list your sins, just publicly admit your ARE a sinner. In front of the church is a nice place but anywhere is fine)
Repent of your sins ( you have to be sorry you did them and want to try your best to stop doing them)
Be Baptised
Live a Faithful life

Jesus died for your sins on the Cross. He did that out of love for you. He rose from the grave on the third day in victory over death. He wants you to be his child and to live in his Heavenly kingdom when you die. Do you believe that you are a sinner and deserve to go to hell and to be separated from God? Do you believe that God has made a way for you to be saved from your sins and Hell by his son's death and Resurrection? Do you accept him as your personal savior? If the answer is yes, then you can be a Christian. Pray to God if you truly believe in his salvation, and want Jesus to be lord of your life. Confess that you have sinned, and that you can't save yourself. Believe in God's promises! Accept his love and mercy!
love,

Sweetheart, you have the answer. Go to your Christian friends and ask them the question you asked here. You will receive help and won't have all the negativity and nasty comments to contend with. All you have to do is get on your knees(or how ever you are comfortable when you pray) and simply confess to Jesus that you realize you are a sinner and that you need him to come into your heart. You repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in him as your Lord and savior. Then get one of your Friends to help you study and to help you find a church you are comfortable with. If you want to e-mail me please do. Love in Christ.

Read the Bible, abit each day. Find a church that agrees with the Bible, and does not change to suit men (Matthew 15:3). Pray to God to help you find the right church.
