I am a primary school teacher and this term we are studying the Victorians as our topic. We have to link it to art, so I was thinkin about Victorian artists. Ive looked on google but it doesn't really narrow it down. So, deos anyone know a suitable artist from the Victorian era I could use with children (8/9 year olds) ? ? ? The paintings names would be cool aswell , if you can suggest any ? ?

I agree with the last two posts. I'm working on my master's in art history, and if I were teaching a class to that age group I would favor the Pre-Raphaelites. The more modern artists (like Matisse) might be a little hard for the kids to grasp.

I would especially recomend Waterhouse, since his works are popular and pretty. Here's a link so you can check him out:

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/waterhouse/rose.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/waterhouse/&h=600&w=447&sz=39&hl=en&start=9&tbnid=YOvzO0U7gvpXEM:&tbnh=135&tbnw=101&prev=/images%3Fq%3DJohn%2BWilliam%2BWaterhouse%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DX

Waterhouse was active later than the rest of the Pre-Raphaelites, but his aims were in sync with the rest of the movement. They sought the vibrancy and fluidity of the Rennaisance (before the artist Raphael, hence the name), but their works are distinctly Victorian.

One work in particular you might want to include is called "Blind Girl" by John Millas.
Here it is:

It's beautiful, but also good for the class because it features children the same age as your pupils and it can be used as an example of how things were rough for the poor during the Victorian era.

Good luck!

If I'm not mistaken, the Victorian era ran parallel to the arts and crafts (art noveau) period, where impressionism flourished and the bohemian culture was more heralded by the art world than the victorians. Famous artists from this period are Monet, VanGogh, Gustav Klimt, Gaugin, etc.

I hope this helps with your class.

The PreRaphaelites are your best bet. They were uniquely English, and arose out of a uniquely English reaction against the ugliness of the Industrial Revolution. Artists include Burne-Jones, Millais, Waterhouse and Rosetti. Here are some links:
