Its about 9-10 weeks long including reception and inprocessing. He will only get to call about once a week if he does not get in trouble. You mostly write letters from BCT. He will not be allowed visitors until graduation day, then no visitors again until after AIT. How long AIT is depends on what his job is. He will be busy every day. He has to stay there. Things get easier at it every 3 weeks, it start our very strict and eases some every 3 week phase continuing into AIT. Once he finishes training, its 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year unless he is deployed. Then its a year away. A lot depends on his job though.

Black knight has stated almost everything correctly .
IBA- individual ballistic armor
LBV/LBE/LCE-load bearing vest, load bearing equipment, load carrying equipment .
7.5 lbs is the approximate weight of the M-16 A2 assault rifle, effective range is 550 meters, full range slightly over 800 meters, point target range is 300 meters . (Army firing range, furthest target)

I dont knew the precise answer, but most firefights take place at below 500m or even below 300m (yard is 0.9 or 1.1 meters). I also recalls that most modern riffles like m16 have a red dot sight atached to it (its like a magnificasion sight without magnification). You see a read dot. There youre bullets is going to hit. Just some corrections of what has already been posted:
IBA = INTERCEPTOR Body Armor, not initial or whatever was said
M16A2 - 550m point, 800m area

Like in Police academy ask from the camp their "red book"
You may as well practice shooting by asking somebody inside that you want to try.
