I live in the UK and am from sri lanka. I am staying here on the basis of living together (not married) with my partner who is a french national residing permantly in the UK. In April, i would have completed 4 years together. My letter says that i would be eligible for "time limit attached to your stay in this country to be removed". I have heard that the law has changed for work permits and that one has to wait for five years (instead of four)before applying for indefinite leave . I wonder if the same applies to me as well ? Any advice will be welcome.

I am too sure about the work permit situation however, if you are interested in unmarried partnership visa, I can tell you about that.
Basically, you have to submit application form and the fee with the proof of cohabitation that covers at least 2 years (bank statements, bills etc sent to you and your partner, tenancy agreement etc) your partner's letter confirming that you are having genuine relationship and have been living together, your and his passport, your passport size photos, poof of sufficient bank balance form both of you, at least his employers reference to Home Office. When you get it, you'll be given 2 years visa, in which period you can work full time, but not entitled to receive any public fund. If you are still living together after that 2 years, then you are entitled to apply for Leave to Remain Indefinite.
You should check Home Office, UK Visa, Immigration Advisory Service's website for more accurate details. And just in case, check out immigration law firms web pages too, who are able to take up cases on no visa no fee basis very often.
Good luck.

I am sorry, but I don't know the answer to this one.

I would suggest you go to a Law Centre or Citizen Advice Bureau to check this out.

Good Luck!
