i am on anti depressents and mood inhabitors and have been for years i do take your point that did cave hunters get depressed because everyone seems to take them and so it looks like it's the stresses of living and society. but i'll tell you something for nothing if you take that attitude me as an example i have no stress a good husband nice house nice lifestyle and yet i still have depression and feel suicidal at times and it angers me when people ask what have you to be depressed about if i know that i'd be a friggin millionaire. it is a chemical inbalance that causes depression maybe because it's easier to get treatment more people seem to take antidepressents that's a good thing

I have been on anti-depressants for 3 years, i can't cope without them.
I am disabled and have carers and you would be surprised at how many of them are on anti-depressants as well, don't know if its the job.
Doctors just seem to give them out to keep people quiet and get them to go away, but more and more people are now being put on them for all sorts of reasons, and there isn't the therapists needed to help in other ways, at least not where I live.
I have no idea whether people used to get depressed thousands of years ago, but if they did they obviously had a better way of dealing with it cos there wouldn't have been any tablets, besides people then didn't used to live as long as we do now so there would have been less older people depressed.

About 2 years ago, I started having panic/anxiety attacks in places that I haven't had any issues in before, like the dentist office and sitting in church. I have always lived a happy life and never dreamed that I would ever need any anti-depressants. The md put me on effexor and it has helped considerably.

i think modern society (selfishness, greed, money driven, status seeking, egotistical....the list goes on) is responsible for all of this. people turning a blind eye to it furthermore isolates those who are suffering or who question whats up with the world. so it can only get allot worse before it gets better! anti depressants are sometimes necessary, but i think sometimes people take them because they are to lazy to deal with the root of their problems or don't have the time or patience to deal with things....NB sometimes people really do have chemical imbalances and antidepressants are necessary! we do however live in a society which seems to think theres a pill or quick fix for everything going faster and faster less time for one another and often less time for ourselves and our families even and so it goes on and on. i am pretty sure sure that more and more people will take antidepressants as time is of the essence. that's all i have to say.....find the good things in life that feed the human inside you and we can generate a bit of love and togetherness along the way!! peace.. and yes lets go back to caves and hunt for our food Please.

If I was depressed I'd pin the issue down and deal with it. To me, all it amounts to is Satan at work...very easy to get rid of by dealing with why one feels sad no matter what it takes.
Some might listen to people who tell them they can't do anything about anything and I think that depresses people and controls them. Some are actually looking for those very words to be said to them. It's not a matter of -will you except me for who I am- it's the constant behavior towards people that amounts to guilt ridden behavior. If you ask me that's contemplation and it urks me to listen to people request validation for being on disability when they are physically able and constantly angry at everyone because they are.
I do know people who take anti-depressants and don't get it how one can complain that meds are making them not feel good and continue to take them. I think those meds cloud judgement even more when one is so bad off they now can't make a clear decison about the safety of their own health.

I am - and to the idiot who says 'get off them and deal with the real issue' - try it sometime pal. Its not that easy and depression isnt nice - neither is it a made up illness as some believe. Incidentally, I started to take them after my mum died, my brother died followed by several other family members (all from cancer) and then I myself had cancer xxx

why is it that people think that you can just stop being depressed like turning off a light, would you say that to someone with a physical illness?depression is a serious illness, people die from it,theres more pressure in life now than ever I wouldn't function without mine.

to the clown who said get off them and deal with the real issue (I presume u mean underlying issue/issues) I wouldn't post such ill-informed throw-away glib advice, antidepressants need to be weaned off, under the advice of your dictor and not on the 'advice' of some narrow-minded uninformed pea brain who obviously knows sweet FA about the subject
