From time to time my breath gets really shallow, which makes it hard to exert energy and speak. I can't find a pattern to it. Does anyone know what causes shallow breathing?

If there's nothing external involved (like cold air) then it is either an allergic reaction or asthma.

You might be allergic to something that is constantly present such as mold or dirt/dust.

Most likely, it is asthma (which is basically the same thing). It's caused by allergic, environmental irritants that narrow the bronchial tubes and cause shortness of breath. It's entirely possible and common that people do not get diagnosed for years because their asthma is so mild that they ignore it. So, you should see a doctor in order to diagnose and treat it.
