The Mexican Cession is a historical name for the region of the present day southwestern United States that was ceded to the U.S. by Mexico in 1848 under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following the Mexican-American War. The cession of this territory from Mexico was a condition for the end of the war, as United States troops occupied Mexico City, and Mexico risked being completely annexed by the U.S. The United States also paid $15,000,000 ($298,310,309 in 2005) for the land, which was the same it had offered for the land prior to the war. Under great duress, Mexico accepted the offer. The land ceded by Mexico is 14.9% of the total area of the current United States territory.

Maybe, since we were already in Mexico City we should just have taken the whole country. That way the mexicans would all be speaking English now and wouldn't be illegal immigrants.

You know when you win a war you get to set the terms of the surrender. The US could have just taken the land and not paid anything for it and that would have been legal. But we did the right thing and paid for it. So just what is your problem?

I am endlessly amazed how many people make this same stupid claim, people who should know better.....

Dude, ever heard of.... Indians?

Ninety-five percent (if not more) of the land that Mexico conceded to the US at the end of the Mexican War (and was paid money for) was neither settled by Hispanic people nor under any control by the Mexican Government in any way, shape, or form. What Mexico City conceded to the US was essentially land claims, not land. These vast territories were almost entirely under the control of the native tribes of the region, the so-called "Indians". These tribes completely rejected any Mexican authority over them and there was nothing the Mexican Government could do about it. Mexican officials or soldiers who tried to exercise authority over the Indians usually accomplished nothing except to get themselves killed, often in extremely grisly ways....

Mexico inherited it's claims to the West from the Spanish Empire (which Mexico rebelled against) who for their part got the original land claims out of their a**es....

I am very well aware of that fact. I guess Mexicans are retaliating now by coming over our borders in the millions; illegally, uninvited, and taking jobs from our own citizens. Plus you have drug cartels fighting gang wars not only on our side of the border, but on your's. We also have found very well-constructed tunnels from the Mexican side to the US side so you can traffic your marijuana and cocaine to sale to our people, which further leads to more crimes and deaths in this country. I don't know what your point is about ancient history. Your forefathers mistreated many citizens in the occupied territories you have mentioned. We set them free. There was no such thing as Mexican citizens' or civil rights. Read up on Santa Ana's rule. My solution is to invade Mexico again and make it an even 50% of the total area of current "US" territory.

So. Everyone in THe US should of learned that from history. Its not that big a deal compared to the Spanish, English, Americans and Mexicans stealing the Land from the Native Americans. There's no Honor among thieves. Have Mexico return some land to the Apaches and maybe We'll think about what you've said.

We know our history and we are PROUD of it. The simple fact is we have a better way of life and better culture than Mexico that is why a majority of Mexicans want to come to America.

It's our land. We'll never give it up without nuking someone. Your an insult to Americans for capitalizing the word Mexican and not capitalizing the word Americans.

If you don't like it too bad. America is free, proud and will never submit to anyone. Just try, I can see the mushroom cloud already.

This is a known fact, whats your point?

By the way, I see nothing wrong with that, it would've been bad if the US had taken advantage of being in Mexico city and offered a less amount, but the amount paid to buy this land was very fair!

OK - thanks for the junior high history lesson - what is your point?

You don't see the Mexican government giving back any land to "native Americans" who "owned" the land first. At least Mexico received some money - the Amerindians didn't receive a dime from Mexico (or Spain).

Texas fought for It's own Independance and was NOT part of the USA at the time. And "so what" is my question? Every country that won battles took land from the losers for like FOREVER!!!
look at any world map for the past 2000 years and see how many countries are GONE or changed.

Yeah...and?

And, cantcu, I didn't see Spain paying for a damn thing when they wiped out a race of people and stole their land. History is ripe with examples of countries and empires taking land from one another (at least the U.S. PAID for it). That's war. You don't like it? Join some other species because humanity is obviously not for you.
