Because it has a velocity of its own that makes it tend to escape from its orbit around our planet. Now, this velocity AND the gravitational attraction exerted on the moon by the Earth make the moon go around the Earth. It might be interesting to know that the moon actually moves 2.5 cm further away from the Earth every year as a result of its own velocity.

The Moon is orbiting the Earth because of Earth's gravity. The Moon will eventually crash into the Earth since Earth's gravity is great than the Moon's, but that probably won't happen for billions of years.

Gravity. Basically, the moon is falling toward the earth and moving around it at the same time. The way it stays up there is that it moves so fast around the earth that it falls "beside" the earth, thus maintaining orbit.
