the litter box that i use is a very large one, and it is big enough for both of my cats.

If the cat is new, it may need some time to adjust to the new arrangements. Even if its been going in the tray for its whole life, animals need to be refreshed on the rules and stuff every now and then.Spending some time with the cat, telling it off when it goes in the wronge place and give it HEAPS of prais when it goes in the tray. I used to give my cat treats if it did the right thing so mabye thats an idea too. If all else fails, i suggest you get another litter tray and make sure everything is clean and new, give it a fresh start.
Its also a possibility there may be somthing wrong with the cats bowels. if it continues, i think you should probably take it to the vets and get some profesional advice, not just from some people typing jibberish on the computer (no offence to the people who actually have some answers).

try using pinesol on the floor to get the smell out IF they smell it again they will go back to same spot and poop on there again i had same prob with my cat used pinesol and it takes the smell out
