We live in a small london garden flat but would like a low maintenance dog. But what breed of dog and how can we ensure that it has the best quality of life given we are out all day and can't take it for long walks in the evening

Get a pet rock! A bird or cat would work better for you.

Any dog kept in these conditions will be prone to eat your flat - regardless of breed! However, an elderly dog will not require much exercise and will probably be content to sleep all day. You can approach some rescue centres and ask whether they can help. You will probably still need to make arrangements for someone to come in during the day and let the dog out to relieve it self.
Take a day trip to Battersea - you may be perfect for a dog they have waiting for a home!
If not, I would say get a cat instead. It doesn't require walks, will toilet itself and doesn't care if you are out a lot - infact it will probably prefer things that way so it can rule your flat in peace!

As you can see by the other answers, it would not be fair on a dog to live in your home full time.
Perhaps you could sponsor a dog through somewhere like the Dogs Trust? That way you would be giving a dog a better life and have an interest in it without actually having the responsibility for it's day to day well being.

no dog is that low maintenance, seriously don't get a dog unless you have the time for it, you will end up giving the dog away b/c it doesn't obey or will refuse house training which is what a dog will do if you leave it in a house as long as you are planning, I would start with something a little more low maint. like a cat or a fish, then if that works out then you think about getting a dog

so if you live in a small garden flat, you obviously have very close neighbours, left alone all day the dog will become bored, bark(a lot)and give your neighbours cause to complain,it will probably become quite destructive, chewing furniture, doors, etc,it will also need to go to toilet, can you hold on for five -six hours, until you get to relieve yourself,
I do not think your life style will suit a dog right now to be honest,it is definitely not fair on the dog nor neighbours, please think again, and perhaps a previous poster is right,if so desperate for a pet,do think about a cat and install a cat flap so as it can go in and out

I can't believe you would even consider getting an dog if you are never at home, don't have a fenced yard, or can't take it for walks. Dogs are pack animals which means you and your partner are part of its "pack". It would be cruel to leave a dog in an apartment all day alone, how would the animal relieve itself? Get some tropical fish .....

Not being flip, but your lifestyle isn't good for a dog... the only varietes I think would flourish are an aibo or a nintendog.

Or get a cat. They fulfil the need for something warm and fluffy but they are also quite happy to be alone and exercise themselves. Provided they have a catflap otherwise they entertainthemselves on your carpet / curtains / chairs.

a small one like a westland terrirer that dosen't need alot of excercise, yorkshire terriers are out of the question cos they yap at the slightest sound and will drive your neighbours daft!

Even better still don't get one as it would be cruel on the dog to be left all day.

A chihuaha needs little excercise is very small would be great for a flat. If you got to it won't be as lonely and if there is a neighbour or something that could maybe take him for a walk or just stroke him. You could put the tv on so its as if there is someone there.

Sorry dont get a dog. Try a cat or something caged.A dog would drive itself mad shut up alone all day. Unless you have a good neighbor it would not be fair
