If you are going to vomit then there is nothing you can do to stop it once you are are at the retching stage.
Its best to head for a discreet place and get it over with.
If it is more gastric reflux or saliva build up, and you know it. Then you can attempt to try a few deep gulps or swallows. It sounds gross and seldom works, but sometimes you are in a situation where anything is worth trying.

I have done this several times before, and you will think it is weird, but here it goes. Peanut Butter. Ever vomited peanut butter? I bet the answer is no. So thick and sticky, that it just doesn't come up. You have to eat it as soon as you think vomiting is a possibility. You can't wait until you are running toward the bathroom, but if you feel like you MIGHT vomit grab the JIF. Trust me, you will not vomit peanut butter.

Vomitting is the body's natural way to rid itself of poisons (including illness). Holding vomit when you are sick can be bad. It can cause you to get worse or cause death. You never stated the reason behind vomitting, but most likely it would be sickness. You can temporarily hold it back by closing your mouth and swallowing until you can reach a place to expell it.

I found that laying down face-up may delay your vomit enough for someone to get you a bucket or something. I've been able to delay for about 10 minutes before realizing I must run to the toilet.

I know there is an accupressure spot on your wrist, which helps, if you apply pressure there. It is called the P-6 accupressure point, which blocks the nausea/vomiting signal process. But, really,..., nothing,...if you're about to vomit..... get a bucket!!

Breathing techniques can help. But, seriously, if you need to vomit, you need to vomit. Your body is reacting to something and it can be dangerous to deny that reaction.

talk long slow breaths....if I really feel like vomiting, I count my long slow breaths (something about counting helps me concentrate only on my breathing and helps the urge to vomit/nausea go away).

Stuff sock or underwear in mouth far back in throat & tilt head back.
NO.... Seriously..... WHY prevent this ??
There is something in your gastroentestinal system that needs to be removed via vomitting, keeping it in prolongs your body constantly fighting it.

Take a few slow, deep breaths - sometimes it works, but actually it's best just to throw up and get it over and done with.
