Ofcourse everyone would take the side of their own sect or sect which they have been following. I am a sunni, and we sunnis or atleast people around me who i know dont consider shias as nonmuslims or kafir...we believe you are proper muslims but there are some little differences(division of sects) among us which ofcourse the Islam doesnt allow as you already know. What i believe is we should follow the lifestyle of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) exactly as it was and each and everything he did and taught us because he was the last prophet and if Allah would have wanted us to do some more different things etc so he would have sent more prophets so i guess whatever you do for following the Imam Ali and hazrat Hussein etc may not be right. because each and every message from Allah has been completed with Prophet Muhammad. and if you still have any confusion just go for believing in Quran's translation. Because it can never misguide you! all the best! and yeah maatam and all is not good, Allah does not like this at all that we hit ourselves and be sad for someone for more than 3 days whether it was for hazrat imam hussein .

Hussein is the son of Ali ibnu abi taleb, Ali is muh'ammed's cousin and the husband of his daughter fat'emeh, Fatima is the mother of Hussein. imam is the leader in a prayer, it has political meaning for shia more than sunnies. shia think that the leader of Muslims should be grandson of Hussein. but it's more complicated. sunnies disagree. black hijab is not a must but shia prefer this color to symbolize the mourning of Hussein's death in karbala' ambush. both sunnies and shia have one k'ur'an.

shia are a minority in islam 90% of the total muslims are sunni muslims. shia majority are found in iraq and iran. shias have made changes slightly to the true religion of islam - some shias cannot be classed as muslims however some can be - depends on what they believe. shias believe that the bloodline prophet mohammad is infalible to sin.

After Muhammed dead there was some debates about who should take his place. Some thought that Abu Bakr should be next the rest thought that Ali should.
Shai follow Ali (ironic since they killed him)
Sunni follow Abu Bakr.

I am a muslem too, the shia is that you believe in god, there is no diffrence between them, you just have to worship god always, pray 5 times in a day, if you can go to mecca and worship god there, and give poor people money, nobody is diffrent then the other, always read the Qurran, always worship god, then you will be a good guy,jus follow these steps and you will go to heaven.
