I am not familiar with this particular case however, there is NO HONOUR in fighting for an immoral cause.

He's totally wrong!! And he makes the rest of the Army look bad. He is a disgrace. President Bush signs his pay check, so he shouldn't be saying anything negative about him---especially when he's in uniform! I am in Afghanistan right now on my second year. We are over here and in Iraq to help them. Without us, there would be 10 times more deaths due to the mines the Russians left over here years ago. We save more lives than we kill, but I bet CNN won't be featuring that tonight. This guy is not only an idiot, but he should be in jail for disobeying his deployment orders. He is using this "illegal war" crap because he is a coward and is scared to do the right thing. Let's not even touch the fact that the Army is probably paying for him to go to school. The Army probably paid for his degree already. That's probably the only reason he joined was for free school. What happened to doing your duty? He's a coward!

No. While soldier's actually do have an obligation and legal duty not to follow illegal orders (and anyone who has been in the military knows this--it is part of basic training), I know of no precedent that a soldier may refuse to follow the orders of the commander and chief which have been endorsed by the congress and the UN Security councel--because they possibly violate some aspects or interpretations of some prior resolutions of the United Nations.
In additon--if the soldier believes the order is illegal he should make his position known up the chain of command. I don't know if Watada did this. But what should not be done is hold a press conference with some flea infested peaceniks.

Definitely not! When given an order, one is obligated both legally and morally to follow it to the "T". I'm sure the deployment orders didn't say shoot women and children or anything immoral or illegal. But you are also held accountable for following an illegal order, which doesn't apply here. I've been to Iraq twice and Kosovo once. As much as I didn't want to go, I did because it was my job, and all my fellow soldiers were going to. All I can say is some individuals try to use " the war is wrong" as a scapegoat to avoiding deployment. Chickenshit!

He swore an oath to serve as an officer in the US military. But, if his reason is based as a conscientious objector on religious grounds he could refuse to serve and be granted a discharge for that reason. Personally, I think he's a coward. It doesn't matter how I feel against the war. A contract is a contract. Before you raise your hand to take the oath, you'd better have thoroughly thought issues out before doing so. I'm sure his arm wasn't twisted to sign on the dotted line either. I'd give him a dishonorable discharge.

The bottom line is he is confused as to what makes an illegal order, and he is going to go to prison because of his ignorance. It is OK for a soldier to be personally against the mission, but he does not get to choose the missions. Illegal orders involve being directed to do something that is a violation of the law of the land. Period. If he wants to make a stand on this issue, that is his choice, but he should absolutely go to the Leavenworth School for Boys.

He is not and I feel he should be jailed, even shot to be perfectly honest. He is an OFFICER. He is a leader of men and he VOLUNTEERED to be in the military. I bet he's quick to use the GI bill however to help pay for his education however. He is a soldier. He doesn't get paid to think, he gets paid to do. If he wanted to have choices, he should have been a civilian. I don't have a problem if he opposed the war, I have a problem with him not going over when there are other soldiers getting hurt over there and he can just complain, hold his breath, and not go.

If your in the Military you took a oath to obey the orders of the president of the US and the Officers Appointed above you and also signed a contract. If you break that it means you have no honor and should be put in prison. Lucky if you get prison for refusing to go. The Max punishment is death I believe.

I believe that this coward is in the wrong. In my opinion he should be tried by the Courts Marshall and should be brought up on every charge they can find under the UCMJ. He is setting a very bad example to not only the American Military but he is giving America a bad international image. If he was scared to lose his life then he should have chosen another career. This is a disgrace to all that have given their life in the defense of America's interests.

I disagree totally with the first answerer. You join to serve your country. Whether you agree with the Politicians or not is neither here nor there, if people in all walks of life refused to do their jobs 'on moral grounds' or because they disagree with something there would be anarchy. This person is being paid to do a job and should do it, or face court then chucked out with no pension rights.

No. This is an act of cowardice. He joined the Army after the invasion of Iraq. He's reaped the benefits of being in the Army, and suddenly doesn't want to fight? My recruiter swore to me that I wouldn't deploy, but I did. I didn't refuse to go, even though it meant I would be in the Army an extra year. There isn't anyone in the military who can say the had no idea that our job is to fight wars.
He is setting a terrible example for his soldiers, and he should be shot.
