I take poppers (iso-butyl nitrite) and, admittedley, have not felt any deleterious effects. I do realize that this is no indication that there have been no deleterious effects and was wondering if there is any scientific evidence for any.

Thank you

Scientists have said is that there is no demonstrable evidence that alkyl nitrites are unsafe or addictive - this doesn't, however, mean they are safe.

Remeber that poppers are toxic, highly volatile and flammable and you should act responsibly when using them. Be very careful if you are a smoker - smoking and poppers don't mix!

Can't say I've ever felt any negative effect while using them, but I know some people do get a very bad headache.

One thing to watch out for is that it can cause a drop in blood pressure - so if you already have low blood pressure there might be risk of fainting. Poppers are dangerous for anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure and for anyone who is asthmatic. Many people report allergic reactions such as rashes or eczema after frequent use which often disappear when the use of poppers ceases.

The use of poppers with Viagra is particularly dangerous as it can lead to a dramatic fall in blood pressure and may prove fatal.

I cannot find any very up to date studies, and it does seem to me that there is an air of homophobia in the old studies, don't know if that effects how the evidence is presented however.

The risks:
The effects don't last long and can leave people feeling sick, faint and weak. Especially if taken while dancing.
Some men have trouble getting an erection after sniffing poppers.
Poppers can give you an extreme headache.
Some people get a rash around their mouth.
Poppers are toxic and can kill you if you swallow them.
Taking poppers is a dangerous idea for anyone with chest or heart problems, anaemia or glaucoma (an eye disease).
It's not advisable to take poppers if you're on medication to reduce your blood pressure or taking Viagra, as it can cause your blood pressure to drop to a dangerous level.
Poppers can burn your skin on contact.
They're highly flammable – especially if you dip cigarettes into a bottle of poppers, which is another way of taking the drug. Lighting these cigarettes could take your eyebrows off.

I am unable to get informattion on written studies (evidence) and conclusions but you can visit the Talk to Frank website and call or e-mail them in confidence for more information

they decrease blood pressure in the body, but increase it in the brain.
postural hypotension resulting in fainting upon standing is a problem.. may not seem like much, but you hit your head on something and it is.

besides overdose... they are risky by causing blood pressure spikes within the brain, the poppers user risks microstrokes. Prolonged use can cumulatively decrease the efficiency of the brain blood vessels' pressure regulation function, permanently raising intrabrain blood pressure and significantly increasing the risk of a more serious stroke.

it can reverse cyanide poisoning too.. just in case lol

The most obvious effect is that they relax the muscles of the anal passage thus allowing the insertion of inappropriate objects.

But as this is the main reason people use the damn things, presumably you know this already.

They can kill you. They cause rapid rise in blood pressure and heart rate.
