Hi I am a single mother and I have an only child. My son is 13 years old and ever since this winter started, his skin has been getting so dry and rough like sandpaper, but its everywhere-on his entire body. I went to see a dermontologist and she said he just needs to be applying lotion on every day.

She said it is not any skin disease, but just very horrible dry skin . The dermontologist said that any normal lotion would fix the dry skin, so I picked up Nivea Body lotion, for very dry skin and its new and smells pretty good.

I told him that after he takes his shower/bath he MUST apply the lotion on his entire body. I always lotion his back, and I must say his back has improves a little, but the rest of his body did not yet.

I found out he is not even using the lotion, the bottle is still full. He says he does but he does not. I told him that girls will not like dry skin, I even asked if he wanted to pick out his own lotion and he said no.

forgot to say, a few days ago I went into the bathroom, after his shower and I caught him pumping the lotion into the toilet.... I do not know what to do.

I actually saw him with the lotion trying to make it empty it.

His dry skin is too bad to be ignored

Lotion just isn't cool for 13 yr old boys. My son wouldn't dry his hands in the winter and they would get so dry they would crack and bleed. For some reason, hand lotion freaked him out, maybe too pretty smelling? I found some "Corn Huskers" lotion and he was OK with it because it didn't have a greasy feel. Try finding some kind manly lotion.

I see you are really worried. I suggest you get a second opinion on his diagnosis. This condition is not normal - he may be missing vitamins in his diet or vitamin E for example.

Does this condition reaccur every winter?

I think it is not a topical problem especially if you lotion his back and still find no results. I also suggest using natural lotion product with chamomile, aloe etc

How about a serious moisturizing soap and then an oil he can apply while in the shower. Neutrogena has wonderful products.

What else can you do, he just doesn't want to use the lotion. It doesn't seem like you continually on him is helping.
Just leave it alone.

Nivea's a good choice. just suggest it when its obviously uncomfortable. maybe he thinks of it as another chore. My 13 year old would think so
