This is the most serious question i have ever asked, so please help me? I have two standard poodles, and they have just come to my house after their retirement as breeders. I love them sooo much, and i have known them all my life, as i used to work at the breeding place. When me and my mum go to work, the dogs go into a kennel in the back garden/yard. But they bark and bark all day long, or one does, and the other one joins in from time to time...
They have done it twice in a row now, in two days, and we have been reported to the council, as there is a council estate backing onto our house. I love them so much that i couldn't let them go. But my mam is taking them back to the breeding place to be rehomed, so then they wouldn't even be there!
I am crying now and cant see the keyboard, i love them too much, and so does my mum, probably more than me. I will be in the house today but i will put them in the kennel to have one more chance, incase4 i can save them any tips to stop barking??

I am actualy a dog behaviour specialist, but I only have one more chance to let them stay, if they go in the back garden and dont bark, they might have a chance. Please? This is not funny for me, i need proper answers because if these dogs have to go it would kill my mam, she loves them too much. We have one day until the council are coming.
I've never needed your help more.

You can try a citronella collar - it is like the noise collars others have mentioned, but when the dog barks the collar sprays some citronella, which dogs don't like the smell of. You can usually buy them from pet stores and vets; I've also seen them on eBay. Good luck, hope it goes well :(

First of all, it is upsetting when someone complains about you but you need to realise that some complainants are just grumpy people who stay at home all day and so any noise is a nuisance to them. If they have only been barking for 2 days but are normally quiet then perhaps something is upsetting them? If you have only had them for 2 days and they have always been barking then you will need time to teach them how to behave and settle them in.
The Council will initially be looking for ways to help you solve your barking dogs problem - they won't remove the dogs or fine you straight away. So don't panic - they can only take real action against you if it is proved that the barking dogs are interfering regularly with someone's quality of life (eg keeping them awake regularly - or drowning out the sound of their tv all day etc). A noise that is just annoying is not enough to take action against you.
Are you sure that your dogs are barking all day? Or, is it intermittant? Have you actually heard them?
Dogs that have been kept in kennels tend to develop this kind of behaviour because they are bored. Did they do it in the breeding place? If not, then you can have confidence that you can settle them in. Dogs that move to a new home will often bark until they settle in because they are anxious and do not yet know which noises are a threat and which are normal.
Ideally, dogs that move to a new home should not be left alone for a few weeks until they settle in. As they feel more secure in their new environment you can build up the amount of time that you leave them for. Practice when you are at home by leaving them in one room or downstairs. Leave them with a chewy thing to keep them entertained and return to the room before they get agitated. Build up the time you leave them as they gain confidence. Keep them away from noises - eg, in the back of the house - so that they don't get started off by passers by etc.
Have an honest conversation with the Council officers about the situation - they may have suggestions to help you. For example, can the kennels in your garden be moved away from the complainants house? This may cost you but it may be sufficient to ensure that the barking dogs doesn't impact so much on whoever has complained.
Good luck and don't give up yet!

You can buy a collar from a good pet shop or a vet which emits a signal when the dog barks, which surprises the dog and stops it. It is very effective and the best way to stop them.
I am so glad that you acknowledge that your barking dogs are annoying people, though: I hvae a dog at the back of my house which barks all day and drives me crazy. The owners say they can't do anything but they still leave it out all day and, regrettably, I had to contact my council to write to them, which has caused bad feelings. I suggested they use the collar but they say they will not "waste" the money on what they do not see as a problem (they're out, they don't hear the dogs). So, firstly, well done on acknowledging that you need to do something. And ask your vet about the anti-dog collar.
Also, go to see the neighbours who complained. Politely explain that you are doing something about the problem and ask them to be patient - I am sure they will. They don't want to see the dog taken away, they just want to see the noise kept down.
Good luck

There are several options.
You can put them in a doggy day care temporarily, and pick them up on the way home..(email me your city, and I will find one for you)
You may have a friend willing to keep them during the day for you, until they are trained.
You can get them indoor crates, and keep them indoors until the problem is solved.
You can get the no-bark collars, at any pet supply shop. The sonic (irritating buzzer) works very well, without traumatizing the dogs.,Here, they cost $30 at WalMart (department store) Or one no-bark trainer, that attaches to the fence of side of kennel, and sounds a high buzz each time the dog barks.
You can feed them chamomile tea, to keep them calm, as their barking is caused by stress..
Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for them.
Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. Mix it in a little canned food, or canned meat, and give about 30 minutes before they need to relax. It will keep them happy, but reduce stress. It can be given as needed.
You can mix it in kibble, so they eat it throughout the day. they will soon learn how to deal with the stresses of the new living arrangement, and the tea will no longer be needed. this was given to me my vet, many years ago, as I had a very noisy litter of Doberman pups, and it works like a charm..

Why are they locked in a kennel? You say the dogs have only just come to your house and then they get locked in a strange kennel. Maybe you haven't allowed them enough time to settle into their new home. If they have only barked for two days then you have plenty of time to find a solution. Maybe you need to see a dog behaviural specialist.

They have electronic things to get dogs to stop barking. i have one that lets off a high pitched noise when they bark and my neigbor has a shock collar which is horrable but yet funny to watch. but yell it works. your choice. but also It sounds as if those dogs need more attention then you have time for. I know you dont want to here this but i would let these two go and do some reaserch on a good dog to have that does good alone. some dogs just cant take it like example of a dog not to have is a Austrailian Shepard or a Dalmation they need lots and lots of attention. a good dog would be a Blue Tick Hound my little Girl(dog) suites herself and finds her own things to do while we are gone and loves us while we are here. while my aussie will get angry and chew up something special that he sees me use alot when he gets upset.
