If Iran's leaders are as fanatical as they appear to be they are clearly too dangerous to be allowed to continue their nuclear development.
As Iran is a large country with substantial military resources is there any other course of effective action that can be taken against them other than a nuclear attack?

when Iran gets nukes it will balance the power in the world... why does everyone look at it so negatively?

Lets not forget who actually used a nuclear war head.

Firstly, nuking them would throw the World into another World War. China has made it clear that it cannot tolerate a war in Iran and a conventional one at that, since it has considerable interests in Iran- not to talk of a nuclear war. Russia also has significant interests in Iran and is currently building a peaceful purposes nuclear plant in that country.

Secondly, use of a nuclear weapon by a Nuclear Weapon state will throw the NPT into shambles and evoke a round of arms race that will make the cold war era arms race look like a picnic.

Thirdly, you must remember that when the US used nuclear weapons on Japan no one else possessed them. The United States, moved even by the most whimsical of motives will never start a war that may well result into self annihilation.

So....negotiations are the only way out. Th US president should stop calling people 'evil' and start giving what is termed 'negative security assurances'. The US president should know that a treaty is a treaty and should therefore respect the NPT and should not have signed a nuclear cooperation agreement with India when the NPT is specifically against that kind of cooperation with non-member states. Such moves only strengthens the resolve of states intent on breaching the treaty and developing nuclear weapons. The word is negotiate, negotiate and negotiate not "axis of evil"

Iran is no threat and they are not fanatical as this is how the media wants the public to view eastern countrys .If these country's are invested in the return would also be better nabours .Do not believe what the media says as money plays a part in building a country and destroying it.Some of the best carpets come from iran .If a major reactor was built to service all the surrounding states not just iran it would be a better way.

There is no military option in Iran to be honest. Also, to the one poster that feels that missles can't travel 7000 miles, uh... they're call ICBMs. And even if they didn't have them, all they would need is a "frog"... a small nuclear warhead with an effective blast radius of about 20 city blocks to be really effective, which could be smuggled into the US.

I feel our only option is to appeal to young Iranians in their country. To provide them with opposition support. To encourage them to vote moderate politicians into their country. THEY will make a greater difference.

Remember Bush during 9/11? He had record approval ratings. The man walked on water. If we attacked Iran, its people would rally to its leader and THAT would be a disaster. I say make the Iranian masses hate its government and let them overthrow the government (With our blessing)

I don't know Prawn and Jaqui you say the Iranian government is not dangerous. what about their leader saying it is his destiney to first wipe out Israel and then the west? Or maybe you think that's a good thing? I saw him say these things on TV more then once. And I guess them being the biggest providers of weapons and insergents fighting the Iraqui's trying to stop them from being a free people is a good thing also. Hopefully the people of Iran will overthrow this very unpopular government. I have heard that we are helping in this endevor. But if we do have to stop them if it comes to that point where it's either be nuked or stop them I hope we do it fast and do a good enough job to squash their spirit of ever trying to do it again.

I'm not aware of Iran posing any threat. They have not interfered in anything so far and who the hell are we to say which country can do what and when? Would the Americans like it if they were told how to run their own country? Would the UK like it? The answer to that is 'NO'. If they become a violent threat of any sorts then the UN needs to decide what course of action should be taken.

Look at what interference has caused so far - a major loss of life and this is still continuing with no end in sight!

So let me get this straight, Iranians are all fanatics, just waiting for an opportunity to blow America off the face of the earth, is that it ? It`s 7000 or so miles from New York to Tehran. You tell me what type of missile is capable of that distance ? Iran and other countries are arming themselves with nuclear weapons because that is the only thing that keeps America from rampaging over their countries for no better reason, other than it can. See Iraq for an example of America destroying a civilisation for absolutly no good reason what-so-ever. Good luck to Iran and the rest of them.

The Iranian people are not the problem (as is usually the case anymore), their government is. That being said, the Iranian people need to think long and hard about what just happened in Iraq. Personally, I would hate to see it come to another war in the Middle East, but there doesn't appear to be much of an option anymore.

They don't have it yet but if they get one, they just might like to try it out. If we pop them, we have to be prepared for them to flood over the Iran-Iraq border. Hopefully, the new Iraqi army will be able to help fend them off.

And if we go for the facilities making weapons, we will have to fight them. It will not be pretty. But it may be the only option. The nuts in that country are a real threat, possibly more than Kim Jong Il.

When you break the rules(UN) then what do you expect? BTW I don't think America can do it now that it has Afgan and Iraq to deal with. Same for England it's closest ally. I don't think Isreal will do it because they are at war with Hezbullah and Hamas.

Plus if what the above user said about China is ture then who will do it? I don't see anyone else trying... Russia needs oil to become a super power again I doubt they will vote for an invasion.

Nuking them is the only option, we're not just talking about a terrorist government that we have to get rid of, but its the entire population that voted and support this government. Hopefully Bush gets the courage to take an action like nuking them, and sooner is better than later.
