I live in a very cosmopolitan city, to which I see a variety of nationals on a daily basis. Specifically, I would like to know what can I say to Indian people as I'm passing buy, something they wouldn't expect a foreigner to say. So basically, I would like to know something else that is interesting and friendly to say rather than the ususal and boring 'hello.'

I presume you are referring to Indians from India and not the ones who were discovered by Columbus.

India as you might be knowing is a country with diverse religion, culture and languages. The greeting styles and phrase varies not only by region, religion, language, etc. but even by the mood. So as a generallization even though Hi or Hello I believe would be most widely used greetings amongst Indian, Namaste would do elicit a smile.
