Well, they had to survive to reach the target, didn't they? They wore what passed for a helmet at the time: an insulated leather cap that containied their radio headset and microphone so they could communicate and coordinate their attack, and a way to hook up their oxygen supply (flying over 10,000ft above sea level) so they could breath. A kamikaze was no good if he passed out before he even saw the enemy fleet.

The "helmet" as you've called it was nothing more than a light-duty leather item that was constructed more as a device to keep the earpieces of the headphones in place than anything else-- but it DID provide some protection against head blows in the jolting around in the cockpit "thing"---one has to keep somewhat healthy to make it to the target for the mission to succeed !!!

Radio transcievers (headphones) are located in Japanese helmets. They needed radio contact with scout planes to locate the elements of the US Pacific Fleet they were attacking.

Some did Some did not. the main reason was stated already, air turbulance would sometimes be violent and you could hit your head too hard to make it to the target.

Their helmets were little more than leather hats with chin straps. It was part of their uniform, and they didn't want them to die until they reached their final target.
