Have this Dr. taken an MRI? x-rays? anyway....you can try doing Posterior/anterior pelvic tilts, you can do straight leg raisings, you can stretch those muscles in the back, strengthen you core(abdominals) to help with the muscles in the back. As an athlete you know your stretches, but you have to be more careful how you are working out, if your back is hurting you, taking down a little, dont do as much, continue with your exercises.
If Dr. hasnt refer you to a PT, try it, ask for it, or try a therapeutic massage, to help release any muscle spasm or trigger points you might have.
Good luck and feel better
here is a site where you can view some of these stretches and exercises

Try sitting in a jacuzzi with the jet on that part of your back. There is also sleeping with one or the other leg hanging slightly over the edge.

Take a nice long, hot, relaxing back. Or get a message from a Spa or get someone to do it for you.
