This increase in the bus fares is Ken Livingstone's way of trying to get everyone in London to have an Oyster card. By doing this he says that boarding times at bus stops will be shorter. Oyster will also reduce the need for paper tickets (eventually!). The single tube fare paid by Oyster pre-pay stayed at £2.00, whilst the single journey by bus went up from 80p to £1.00 (Oyster pre-pay). The daily capping stayed the same for buses (no more than £3.00 per day on Oyster pre-pay). With more outlets now recharging Oyster it would be a wise move to recharge your Oyster prepay before travelling or leave enough on to get you to a place where you can recharge if there isn't a place near you.
I believe that the ticket machines in the street should sell bus tickets at the pre pay rate not the full rate as this too will encourage more people to buy their ticket before boarding. It should be extended to all bus routes not selected bus routes outside zone 1 and all routes within zone 1. I also believe that these machines should be able to recharge Oyster cards which they do not (not at present anyway!) I also believe that those caught travelling without a valid ticket or a validated Oyster should pay a penalty fare of £50 on bus or tube! I am sick of people trying to evade paying their fares. It is these fare dodgers that drive up the cost of the honest fare payers! All too often on the No. 18 route (Sudbury to Euston) I see people getting on the bus without paying for their fares.
I can see logic behind what Livingstone is doing to eradicate on the spot cash fares as the most annoying thing I see often is someone boarding a bus with a £10.00/£20.00 note! Bring back the flat fare no change given system as it was in 1984! Bus fares were 30p flat rate but no change was given! The fare should be a flat rate of £1.50 no change given! Reward the Oyster users for paying for their fares before they use the services. TFL get their money and earn interest on it! The Oyster users get nothing to say thank you from TFL except a lower fare!
By the way season tickets can be added to Oyster and you can have pre-pay all on the same card just in case your season ticket expires at an inconvenient time!
Good luck in finding the best answer!

well the clue here is to not let the oyster card run out!!
While it may be oppressive, to get the cheapest travel in London it is necessary to use an oyster card, those who don't WILL pay the overpriced and ridiculous fares that have been inflicted on to us Londoners! I suspect the high rates of travel is to get more money out tourists and for those of us who forget to top up the oyster card! OF course the other thought that Oyster cards are part of a big brother scheme to watch what we do and where we go and to also get us used to the idea of an ID card.

I live in Epsom, just outside the zone system. That means that I cannot top my Oyster card up here. Even though there are at least 3 buses that I take regularly that accept Oyster cards!!
I also dont live anywhere near a shop that does Oyster top up, so even if I wanted to use the Oyster system I cant!!!

get your oyster card on that automatic top up thing where if it falls below a certain amount ie;£3, it tops up from your bank account automatically!
have been there, stuck on the wrong side of the barrier with no credit! its so annoying
(oyster cards are pre paid cards to use on buses tubes in London!)

Oyster is a TOTAL CON!!!
I have had enough of this service. Unfortunately we have to comply to this;.. Everyone that I know who has an Oyster card has been ripped off by it one way or another. Either an unexplained charge on it, or no procedure for lost or misplaced cards.
I think that we should have some form of legal rights to stop this kind of blatent squeezing on the public!!!

its called running a service wrapped up in red tape.
Before it was privatised British Rail actually cost us and the government nothing, it broke even, sometimes even made money.
Now, we pay a small fortune to travel by train, poor service. We subsidised it through out taxes, but the share holders and over paid boardmen/women get big bonus.
As usual it is the average commuter who foots the bill of inefficiency.
Solution - buy shares is government subsidised private companies (oxymoron!), that way when your shares go up or you get a bonus, it's like a tax rebate.
