he needed to be taught as a puppy that its okay when people touch him and his food when he eats... when i feed my puppy i make sure to always run my hands through his food and to pet him and even pick him up so that he gets used to it now...

I had the same problem with my dog and sought the advice of a trainer. She suggested giving the dog extra food morsels when eating his bone e.g. liver treats, sausage pieces, hotdog - basically anything that is more appealing than the bone. This way your dog learns that an approaching hand when eating is an exciting thing and good behaviour is rewarded. You can then progress from this is patting your dog on the rump and rewarding with a treat, or offering the treat and patting at the same time if need be. Eventually you should be able to pat the dog and only offer treats intermittently. This worked for my dog but took about a month of consistently treating him whilst eating and I still reinforce it 3 years later (but only about once a week nowadays). Good luck.

Claim the food, toys a treats as YOURS! What I mean is the dog is nipping at you because it is his. So what you do is claim it as yours and "share" with him. Get a treat out let him know that you have it and place it on the floor. Do not let him have it. Use what ever dicipline you usually use with him. You keep the treat /toy or whatever there untill he calms down. If he is laying calmly but still intently staring at it do not give it to him. Wait untill he is completely relaxed to give it to him. This exercise is two fold. For one you are rewarding the behavior that you want from him by giving him the treat when he is calm. Two, you are stopping him from getting aggressive over the treats. Keep doing this excercise with him and he will know that the treats belong to you and he will only get one when he is calm. Good Luck!
**I had to add**
It is not a matter of leaving him with the bone and "why would you want to" It is a matter of he is getting aggressive with you and you need to stop this. Stopping the behavior does not have to be tramatic, patience is the key here, but you do need to let him know that you are in charge and you do not like his behavior.

It's not something that is easily overcome with an adult dog,he will probably always do it. You needed to teach him that as a puppy and consistently. We have done that with all our dogs and you have to mess with them and pet them and put your hand in their food bowl, but you don't actually tease the dog and take away what he has for a long period of time, that will just make him defensive and teach him the behavior that he displays now.

Most dogs growl or bite if you pet them while they're eatting. It’s generally a good idea not to go near a dog who’s eating – especially things they like to chew for a while, like bones.
It’s probably better just to give the dog some space while it’s eating. That way you won’t get bitten, and your dog won’t get stressed.

This is not to be tolerated. However it's impossible to give proper advice on a situation like this over the net. You should seek help from a professional in your area. Your veterinarian or local breed club can put you in touch with such a person.

If you know he doesnt want you to pet him while he's got a bone - why would you????? leave the poor dog alone. most dogs dont like you touching them when they eat. Thats the first thing children should be taught when they get a dog. Leave it alone....then you wont get bitten

Animals do not like to be disturbed when they are eating. Their instinct is that you are trying to keep them from eating or take their food and the instinct for that is to bite. Animals are animals, people should have sense enough to leave them alone at times.

that should be corrected. he might injure a kid someday. maybe thats his way of playing "tug". or he is simply selfish. does he draw blood when he bites? or is it just a light grip?
