My best mate and his wife have recently moved to Brisbane and it is our intentention to visit them for a few weeks sometime during 2007. I've heard that an amalgamation of buget airlines, headed up by that nice Mr Branson and Mr Stelios are getting together to offer cheap long haul flights around the world. Anyone know if this is a fact, if so when it will happen, and roughly how much they are likely to charge for say 2 adults and 2 kids, return to Aus?

I read in the papers yesterday that Richard Branson is allegedly in talks with Malaysia air to do flights from London to Malaysia for £49, it was mentioned about Stelios been involved in the cheap round the world offers too, guess they will happen but it could take about a year to sort out, have you tried Travelmood on the net, they have some really good deals for Australia at the moment if you can book by Valentines day, my hubby and I are going at Easter and got our flights for just under £1.400 for the pair of us and were doing stopovers in Singapore and San Francisco in that price too, hope you manage to get a good deal and get to Australia to see your friends soon, good luck and a happy new year to you and yours.

There is allegedly discussions going on with Richard Branson, Stelios and AsiaAir about running a low fares alliance that would mean you could fly long haul routes to Australia etc.

I would imagine it would be Virgin Blue of Australia and not the UK based Virgin Airways which would not be involved, as well as a number of Asian airlines and possibly easyJet of the UK.

The idea is the brainchild of Tony Fernandes, who is the owner of AirAsia, but he is keeping quiet about the possibilities of any new alliance.

I would think it is some years away before this even gets off the ground.

Gee Phil, get that chip off your shoulder, quite a generalisation. Down Under there is something of an airfare war right now, so Id check online and local agents to see whats available. Im presuming you are flying from North America, you and your family may be able to do this 4 around 3k. From NZ its as little as NZ$400 return (US$280)
