Go to ikea!!

It's got some really cool stuff and it's relatively inexpensive. They also have room setups so you can get ideas of how you could decorate.

When I went away to college, my mom and I completely redecorated my old bedroom so it could be a guest room. We picked a color theme (red and black) and then painted my old dressers black, got a new red bedspread, got some black shelving units, and painted the walls a warm off-white color. You might not be allowed to paint in an apartment, though you normally are as long as you pay to have the walls redone when you move out. Painting is a nice way to give character to a room instead of leaving it a sterile white.

But here are some basic tips:
1) pick either a color scheme or an idea/concept; it'll keep things looking cohesive and well decorated. Like for my old room, I picked "zen." I have some of those mini bamboo plants, a little zen garden, a gorgeous cut-paper asian dragon in a frame on my wall, etc. It's not like the room looks like it belongs in a far east storybook, but it's enough to give the room a little bit of tone and personality.

2) keep it simple. Especially in an apartment, clutter can ruin the best decoration ideas. Trinkets are especially bad, becuase all they do is fill space you could use for functional things.

3) get some pictures you like for the walls. it's really amazing how a couple of well- placed pictures can complete a room. You can get some cool prints pretty cheaply either online or at Ikea, et cetera.

The most important thing is to keep in mind how you want to use a room. TV/ videogame area? Nice couch and armchair, and a TV stand that has a compartment underneath for housing all the wires and controlls when you're not using them. And so on. I'd suggest getting some magazines so you can see some ideas of how rooms can be put together.

I hope it comes out great!

The success of any decorating scheme depends on how well it suits all the members of your family. If you are starting with a color, your samples might include fabric, paint chips, wallpaper, carpet, wood, stone, and tile.
