Openoffice is compatible, but not 100%. You can import MS Word documents using the import fetaure, but sometimes you might get formatting problems if the Word document has multiple tables, columns, graphics, etc.

OpenOffice is the best free suite that is mostly compatible with Microsoft Office formats.

The reason I say mostly, is because there is no free or commercial suite that is entirely compatible with Microsoft Office formats, and that includes the actual official Microsoft Office suite itself!

Unfortunately, even Microsoft is unable to provide 100% compatibility between their own different versions of Microsoft Office.

The sad truth is, there is no such thing as 100% compatibility - any upgrade, no matter which vendor you choose will entail some level of incompatibility.

See the link below for a comprehensive list of office suits you can try.

No, OpenOffice is compatible. And to my knowledge, there is no other complete office suite that is free. You have to get the word processor, spreadsheet, database manager and presentation softwares separately.

The newest version is supposed to be universal compatibility. But I think older versions of office are only compatible with office.

Openoffice.org applications are compatible. Also you can download AbiWord for another application that can read and write MS Word documents.
