No. The sweetner cannot be digested by humans. It is simply discarded as waste. Although there is some debate depending on who you want to believe that it can possibly cause cancer. Although there has been no documented case of this for humans...yet.
Other than the sweetner, diet soda is carbonated water and caffeine.
Regular soda has regular sugar that the body will absorb and use for energy. If the energy is extra, it stores the energy as fat. So you will gain weight from regular soda.

Diet soda is not by itself more fattening, but studies show that people who drink diet soda gain MORE weight than those who drink regular soda.
It appears that the artificial sweetener makes the body think that sugar is coming, when it really isn't. It produces insulin and nothing comes and suddenly you have a problem and your body has to come up with sugar to fix it. So you have cravings and pound down a couple of candy bars. We've all seen people do that.
I rarely see anyone who drinks diet sodas who are not fat.
The artificial sweeteners basically come back and bite you in the butt and your overall caloric intake will probably be higher due to cravings.
Soda is just bad stuff. Break the habit and I will bet you will lose several pounds just from that.
Best to you.

These people are stupid. Nothing is poison in coke or diet coke. There is/has been controversy about artificial sweeteners for years but we've come full circle on that even and now saccarin (which caused cancer in the 60s, doesn't any longer. What do you know?

Hey there! I think the big fuss about diet coke is that it uses artificial sweeteners like Equal or Sweet'n'low with contains sacharin which supposedly causes cancer. I don't know the whole story but hopefully this website helps you out a little bit!
Good Luck

Diet Coke has no calories. Regular Coke has high fructose corn syrup.
Fat comes from calories, not artificial non-caloric sweeteners. Lots of people suspect artificial sweeteners cause cancer, but I think the science is bogus. Just don't replace your water with soda: use moderation.

Many people ask me how they can slim down. I recommend that people eat right and exercise. However, if they would like a little "help", I suggest using natural Hoodia (it's important to note that not all Hoodia works well, even if the bottle says "pure" or "standard").
The Hoodia sold at http://tinyurl.com/y389on is in my opinion the best Hoodia on the market. It's pure, has no side effects, and they give you a free 15 day sample (there is a $7.99 shipping and handling charge, but they also give you free recipe and diet guides). Fantastic results have been seen with this particular Hoodia.
