I think it's pretty much the same reasons why adults smoke, drink, take drugs :

1). In the beginning it's something new, maybe a "flash" of some sort, maybe your peers influence you.

2). It starts becoming a little habit, having a cigarette, an alcolholic beverage, e.g. a joint every few days/weeks/months

3). All of a sudden, speaking from experience, it just starts feeling normal, which is probably the "fatal" aspect, so to speak, about drugs of all sort.
The weekly cigarette becomes daily, the "drink-on-occasion" turns into a "party-drug" every friday and saturday, when you're with friends, to seemingly relieve yourself of the daily stress at school.
The joint becomes a savior, and an object to sever yourself from your parents, teachers, whatever...

Adolescents tend to use drugs for protest, fun, first time experience, party-usage, ... the list goes on..
I wouldn't go so far as to say, that they are all becoming addicted, because for most it's just a one-time thing.
I think it is actually wrong to say, that mostly adolescents are becoming addicted at an early age, because I know, from other people, that they tried e.g. a cigarette with maybe 12 years of age, found it grotesquely disgusting, which was a major turn-off for their teenage-years, but started smoking at the age of 20, after having tried it again...I know this from my mother, who, had her first cigarette with 11, and started smoking frequently at the age of 21 or 22, continuing this for almost 25 years, but has succesfully quit, and now, I, at 17, find myself in exactly the situation you project, that, adolescents tend to smoke, drink, take drugs..
but, as I have shown, it's mostly the same process for adolescents and grown-ups
