I read somewhere that sucking chopsticks is considered bad manners and, specifically, it has sexual connotations.

I think I saw it in one Hong Kong kungfu movie (Jackie Chan's "Project A" if I remember correctly); where there's a scene in which a bunch of guys were flirting with/teasing a few girls in a restaurant and one guy does that. But maybe I may have misinterpreted the scene.

However, when I asked a Southeast Asian friend of mine about this, he said he couldn't recall this being bad manners.

Is it really true ? Or is it considered rude only in some parts/countries of Southeast Asia ?

I would guess it may be more of a hygiene issue. Nobody wants to touch the food you did with chopsticks marinated in saliva.

It is rude to stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice. This means that you are offering the food to the spirits. To be avoided at all costs

Sucking chopsticks is like licking your spoon. In Japan, to further your question, stabbing your chopsticks into your rice and leaving them there is bad etiquette. Passing food from your chopsticks to someone else's is also bad.
