You're right. There area a number of different versions of Gaelic, with the Scotts and Irish having distinct versions.

Ancient Europe had a number of different tribes running around, with the Celts, the Saxons and such. I believe that the Saxons sort of compressed the Celts to the North and to Ireland, and that's how the separation came about. I'm not a historian though.

There are Celtic groups in Brittany, parts of Spain and other locations throughout Europe, and not just Scotland and Ireland.

There are several dialects of Irish and Scottish Gaelic (actually, there's about a hundred). However, the most commonly spoken language over there is English.

Yes, being Scottish or Irish is different from being English.

You could look up the definition of ethnicity, and that might help answer your question.

Scotts speak only English, the Irish speak mostly English with some Galic in the north.

Both are their own entities. They all came through the brittish islands a long time ago, but then again didn't we all come from the same area long ago?

"English" is not native of England. It actually came from a group of people(Anglo-Saxons) that left Europe to travel to the the british islands (U.K. is not part of Europe).
