THe drive shaft, consisting of the inner & outer joints, the outer joint shaft, is centered in the hub bearing.. and the hub bearing assembly has the lugs for you to mount your tire to the car... bu there is a big difference in the sound of what a cv joint makes and the hub makes.. cv joint usually clicks when turning and the hub bearing ususally makes a roaring noise.. .. one way to check to see if it is not in the tires, jack up the front end and see if you can move the tires up and down and from side to side.. if you can the bearing is worn.. also you can remove the tires and see if you hear the noise... although it might not sound the same, since the car's weight is not on the suspension.

you need to be more specific on the type of sound, when do you usually hear it (while revving or not, does it get louder with speed or not, does the frequency of noise become faster with higher engine revs etc.)

BUT, if u say tyres, bald tyres can cause road noise. Main bearing is a constant grinding sound in the engine crankcase and it is as good as a write off... might as well get a recon. engine if it is the bearing.
