I've been charged with the task of fixing up the sh1t hole we like to call the basement of our fraternity. We've been given a $2000 budget for a number of neat little improvements that we can make. Right now there is a concrete tile floor that's filthy, stained, and cracked in some places. What I'm hoping for is a number of effective suggestions for cheap, durable, and easy to install flooring for our basement.

To give you an idea of the amount of abuse that it will be subject to, we regularly enjoy various beer drinking activities that results in a fair amount of brew being spilled all over, which is then moped up by a cleaning service within the week.

Following the remodeling we're hoping to be able to eat down there, so there will be tables and chairs being dragged across the floor frequently, with food/drink being spilled on it daily.

Given the rough treatment it is going to endure, I would sure lean towards vinyl tile. I would suggest you buy enough extra too, just in case you have a major disaster, which is certainly not out of the question, for a fraternity house.

This way, you can repair any really torn up places with the extra tile you bought. Might not be a bad idea to maybe have a set of rules to abide by, too.

You should be able to keep within budget and still come out with as nice as is necessary for that kind of use.

there is an outdoor product I have seen for cement that makes it look like stone. It does seal so it can be washed no matter how much beer is spilled on it. I would say to stay away from carpet for sure, because it is a bare basement floor and because of the type of use it gets now and in future plans. I know that it isn't the cheapest, 1 can, about the size of a paint can only costs a little more than a gallon of paint, and pretty much goes on the same. If you can chip ice off it outside and not damage it, I would say that is a good idea for your basement floor. Also since most basement floors aren't 100% perfectly flat, putting down something like tile or wood laminate wouldn't be a good idea, I think it would also be more work and have a shorter life span.

I can't remember the name if this stuff, but I think you can get it at Rona and Lowes, probably Home Depot as well.

Good luck.
