Although it is true that some of the ticket machines in the metro stations do not work 100% of the time, almost always you can find at least one that works in each station. You can choose the language on each machine. Allow extra time for buying a ticket because the lines can be very long.

Buy one at Termini at the ticket window. Buying one at a local station may be difficult if you don't speak Italian, plus the machines don't work half the time.

It's very easy to buy metro tickets. You can buy them in any station, any news stand or at vending machines.
