I have a neutered male domestic longhair who has a history of intentionally pooping where he shouldn't, sometimes seemingly out of spite. Before we moved into this house in June, the most popular place was in the corner under my desk. Since we moved here, he has found the bathtub.

He is otherwise completely healthy, and always pees in the box. We do have one other cat that we got shortly before these problems started, but we have two litter boxes and we keep them very clean. Sometimes he will do it right after we clean them.

Does anyone else have this problem, and is there anything I can do to stop it? The best I have been able to come up with is leaving the tub filled with water.

Have you taken him to a vet for a complete physical exam including a fecal exam and complete blood work up?

My vet has seen many causes for this including intestinal parasites, impacted anal glands, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, urinary tract infection (believe it or not).

The behavioral experts recommend having one more litterbox than you have cats... so 2 cats, you should have 3 boxes. The other things they recommend are: unscented clumping litter, no covered boxes, no litterbox liners, scoop boxes twice daily, clean and scrub boxes monthly (don't use bleach or ammonia...smells too much like urine), at least one box on every level of your home if you have multiple levels.

Does he always go poop outside of the box? If he does occasionally use the box, does he bury his waste? If he isn't burying his waste (urine or poo) he isn't happy with the state of his litterbox. A happy cat will dig and bury. If the box isn't being cleaned enough, they don't like to dig because digging uncovers "dirt".

My own cats will stop burying if I so much as skip one of the daily cleanings! The cat at my vet's clinic will NOT use his box if there is even 1 clump in it!!!

So my advice... 1st, have your vet do a complete workup, if all is normal, review your litter box ettiquette and make any needed changes.

Good luck!

I had a cat who would poop in the tub when I forgot to clean out her litter box.She didn't do this because she was a bad cat she didn't like her litter dirty. At least the tub is easy to clean out. You could try to leave just a little water in the bottom of the tub. But also make sure his litter box is clean.Sometimes cats just don't like to share the litter box with another cat.

You could put the litter box in the tub.
I think I would much prefer the tub to the old under the desk trick., so I would stop with the water. He is of course telling you he is not happy with the other cat.

Leaving water in the tub is an excellent idea. Although I wouldn't fill it. I would only put a small amount of water on the bottom. That way they cat has to jump into the tub to discover it. After a week or so he wont go near that tub.

My friend's cat did that.... and she moved the litter pan to where he was going and after a bit he got the idea... "oh I should be going in there right..... sorry..." and he went back to the litter pan, maybe try putting the litter pan in the tub and take it out for your shower/tub. Hope this helps!!!

If you have a septic system, he smells the poo in it thru the drain and probably thinks that's the place to do it..I had a cat that would do the same if there was no one to let him out. At least it's not under the desk or elsewhere..The bathtub is easier to clean.

My cats will do the same.

You can thank him for doing it in the shower, rather than on the carpet since it is much easier to clean. If you don't want him to go in there try the water thing or they have repellent sprays that might work.

try spraying him with water, (a squirt bottle helps train them) when he goes near the bath.

make sure your litter pan is clean, my cat will go in the tub to, better than on the floor, try a litter pan with a house cover she has not done it in the tub since then.

try putting a litter box in the bathroom. cats like privacy when doing the do so maybe buy one with a cover and put it close to the places he likes to go.
