The cliche of seven years of bad luck typically applies to your credit report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Bankruptices can stay on your credit report for up to 10 years from the date of filing.

Civil judgments, whether paid or unpaid, are to be reported for seven years from the date the judgment was entered, depending on the state of residence.

Unpaid tax liens can stay on your credit report for an indefinite period of time. Once you paid said tax lien, the lien will show on your report as PAID for seven years. Upon completion of that seven years SHOWN AS PAID, THEN and only then, does it drop from your credit report.

Note to self: AVOID TAX LIENS whenever possible!

Forever it don't go away, unless you take steps to rectify the problem. Even after you correct the problem you can still have a problem getting credit. Best advice don't get bad credit to begin with. In our line of work we see this everyday and it's sad to turn people away just when they need help the most......
