The aching is caused by lactic acid accumulation in the muscles. This occurs frequently when you work muscles that haven't been worked in a while. It's easier to cause small tears in the muscle fibers (natural -- nothing to worry about).

In the future you can prevent the aches (or reduce them considerably) with the following steps:

1. Hydrate well before your work out.
2. Stretch adequately before you start exercising as a warm up.
3. After exercising, hydrate and stretch again.
4. Continue greater than average water intake throughout the day.
5. If you suspect you may have "overdone" the workout, take a Naproxen tablet after the workout and another with supper.

When returning to exercise after time off, time spent stretching in warm up and cool down should be equal to or greater than time spent in the active exercise. So if you're planning a 1 hour workout, stretch 15 minutes, workout 30 minutes, stretch 15 minutes.

Since the damage is already done, what you can try now is:
1. Naproxen for pain relief and reduction of inflammation.
2. Light exercise of the muscles that hurt -- mostly stretching.
3. Drink as much fluid as you can - but at least 3 liters (quarts) a day until the pain is gone; and never less then 2.5 liters a day.

Hope that helps

You've worked out muscles that haven't been worked out for a long time, so there is tension on those muscles. You might want to try one of those ointments like Icy Hot or the stuff I use that helps soothe the pain is call "Mineral Ice". It's like Icy Hot, but it's not greasy. What you do it, put the ointment on then rub it into your sore muscles. First it will give you this cool sensation feeling in your muscles, then it will warm it up afterwards. It helps relax the muscles so it's as highly tensed. Make sure to move those muscles as much as you can, and just keep massaging them, so they don't tighten up more and feel more tensed.

Don't give up exercising regularly! Do some form of exercise at least every other day. It's always worse the 2nd day after a first-time workout. It gets better, then you'll be wondering why you never get sore anymore! Good luck.

Take a hot bath or use some icy-hot. Your muscles are just not used to being worked like that. The more you exercise the less it will hurt over time

Take ibprofen (the orange pill) its an anti-inflammatory. Then put ice packs on the sore places, (this also helps keep the swelling down). Then just try and relax, take a long hot bath.
