When my dog pants during her sleep it's either because she's too hot, excited or having a bad dream (yes, they dream)! Also, if there is a storm, fireworks, loud noises...things that cause excitabiltiy could cause it to happen too. Make sure he gets water, air and feels secure. If that doesn't help make a trip to the vet.

Is he lethargic? Does he seem tired our out of sorts? Dogs usually don't pant when the sleep, especially "hard and fast". This is a first sign of left-ventricular congestive heart failure. I see it all the time. You should head to your vet.

Dreaming most likely. My dog does it all the time. Along with much whining and rapid kicking with her feet. It's quite amusing really. But that's just what she does. Nothing to be worried about

Sounds like he is either excited or anxious about something. My dog licks excessively when he is feeling either way. The shaking sounds more like fear, unless he's cold? You could try petting him, and talking to him, try to relax him. I always wrap up in covers and put my dog next to me under the covers to relax him. Hope he's okay!

He might be getting sick if its all of a sudden. If hes a puppy and you just got him he might have asthma, its funny for a dog to have it but its actually pretty common.

Do you give him heart worm pills or have you had him checked for heart worms? This can be one cause. I would take him in for a vet check.
