No, it's not based on rewards and punishments. Yes, I generally can 'behave myself' because it's the 'right' thing to do. The 'right' thing being something that makes my life AND other people's lives better. A lofty goal (this win-win thing), and it's something I strive for.
BTW, who's to say what the 'right' thing is? (I'm left-handed; the 'right' thing bugs me as a term) Our moral behavior is shaped by our society, our family, and a bunch of other factors. So there are some implicit rewards and punishments in any moral behavior, as morals are based on a structure that tells us there is an implicit reward (whether that's feeling good or getting into heaven or some such) or punishment (feeling bad, going to hell, etc.) for our behavior.

My moral behavior has nothing to do with reward or punishment. My marriage is based on that structure. My spiritual walk with Jesus has to do with love, compassion and mercy. I need to learn each day how He could love and have compassion on others. Those that were mean and nasty, how He could love them, and forgive them at their last moment. How he could say Father forgive them they know not what they do. That is the structure that I must learn each and everyday. My moral behavior was taught to me as a child.

A little of both. I think everyone enjoys rewards and doesn't enjoy being punished for anything. But I do believe that people inherently have something inside them that makes them want to do nice things without fear of punishment and without thinking of personal gain. Random acts of kindness.

cause its the righ thing to do, its something you should learn as a kid, maybe reward the kid when good and punish when bad but as they start going to school you should start letting them figure out when your bad youll get punished but when your good it is a good feeling and knowing doing somthing good is reward enough

I try to do what’s right because it’s right and I try to treat others the way I want to be treated.
I admit, I don’t want to disappoint God. It’s not because I hope for a reward, but because he has done so much for me, I don’t want him to be too disappointed with all my failings.

I desire to live my life as God asks of me in His word the bible. Because His ways, I have found, are perfect and because I love Him.
By the way, I fail at it often.
