In order for you to marry her in UK, you do need a visa. If you have been staying in UK with visa, but not visitor’s visa, and if it's still valid, then you should be able to marry her in UK before it expires. After you are married, you will have to apply for marriage visa, submitting application and requirements such as marriage certificate, you and her passport, your passport size photos, proof of cohabitation if you have, or proof of correspondences if you have (letters, record of phone calls you guys made to each other, etc,) if you have not been living together to prove that it is not a marriage for convenience. If your application is successful, they will give you 2 years residency, in which time you can work legally, but can not receive any public fund. If you are still married and living together after that 2 years, then you'll be able to apply for Leave to Remain Indefinite, which is a permanent residency in UK.
If you have not got the kind of visa that let you marry her in UK now, or if you are not in UK, then you have to apply for fiancé visa in British embassy in America. It's a 6 month visa, in which time you can not work. It's only for you to marry in UK, so within that 6 months, you have to marry her, then you will have to go through the process of applying for the marriage visa.
If you want to marry somewhere else in Europe, I suppose you still need a visa similar to fiancé visa.
Check for the details on Home Office, UK Visa's web site. Also check Immigration Advisory Service and immigration lawyers’ webs in case it becomes difficult.
Good luck to you and congratulations.

Talk to the British consul in your area (check on the Internet, there should be one in Chicago, and for sure in NYC and places like that) to find out what paperwork you need. You don't need a visa to visit England but you will need proper documentation to get married...birth certificates and like that.
Once you marry a British person you are usually given automatic dual citizenship, and a British passport. In any case, as a US citizen, residency shouldn't be a problem once you're married. They will probably do a background check, the consulate can help you there.
Best of British luck!
