We live in the United States of America. Calling ourselves Americans is easier than United States of Americans, or Citizens of the United States of America. Get over it. If it really bothers you, you have deeper issues you need to figure out.

GO back to school!! the name of the CONTINENT is not AMERICA - it is SOUTH AMERICA. And for the love of God, learn how to spell - you really aren't representing the brightest of us are you?
ACTUALLY there is SOUTH America and NORTH America,, US Citizens call themselves Americans. the rest of the world calls us North American because South America is also Americans.
We adopted the name for ourselves because we are really the UNITED STATES,,, but wasn't friendly when referring to ourselves - as United States Americans is LONG. we abbreviate for use.. but it isn't a world wide accepted concept. ((travel and you'll learn this!!!))

I think that people have forgotten that America is known as "The Melting Pot" and what sets us apart from every other country is the diversity in races and religions. God Bless America!

"America" in American English refers to the U.S.. People all around the world think of America(U..S.) when they hear the word America. In many languages, the U.S. is called a variation or a cognate of the word "America".

what group are you referring too? People who simply say I am an american or those that claim other countries in front of American? We all have an ancestry that starts outside of the USA not everyone feels the need to add Irish, German, Russian, African, etc in front of it.
