Well in august i decided i wanted to run a marathon. Im young...21. In shape and probably under weight....6'3'' 170 lbs. I run as much as i can, being busy schedule being a college student. I'd say about 15-20 something mile a week. My knees (especially the right) have been hurting lately but only after i run....most of my runs are 6-10 miles at a slow pace (about 9:30 to 10 mins) The pain is sharp and i'd almost descibe it as a shooting paint. I wanted to do a marathon in march but i've had to cut back the ..that doesnt last long at all and sometimes hurts when i go down steps. Since i've had to cut back the miles because of the pain i'll probably do a half in march and a full in the fall...the farthest i've gone is 16 miles but that was over a month ago. I've been biking a lot to keep in shape but i know its not the same. Just want some input on the knee pain....or anything

The knee pain when going down stairs is an indication that you may have a strained knee ligament. I'd suggest seeing a doctor who specialises in sports medicine or a physiotherapist. It may mean taking a break from running (& cycling) for a couple of weeks to allow recovery time.

If you've managed to run 16 miles with 2 months to go, I'd be confident that you're well on track to finish your marathon. Even with a break of a couple of weeks, you shouldn't lose that much condition.

I know that's not what you want to hear with March just a couple of months away, but I'd get it checked before there is a chance of doing more damage.

If you are still able to run & cycle, the pain would most likely be classified as mild. With mild knee pain, glucosamine has shown to be not worth the expense. The large scale trial by the National Institute of Health showed "In the subgroup of participants with mild pain, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate together or alone did not provide statistically significant relief compared to placebo."

Seek a trainer or physician's input. It may be as simple as your shoes or if you always run in the same direction on the street (roads are crested and your right leg is always lower and takes a beating on every run?) You may have started out running too far too soon. Increasing more than 10% each week can lead to trouble, especially if you started out too far to begin with. Talk to the college track or cross country coach. They usually have solutions or can point you in the right direction to get proper help. Running the 1/2 is a good idea---if you're healed up. 10K is a nice way to start off too. You know, work your way up to the full marathon. Good luck. Let us know how you do.

Glucosomine. I had 3 knee surgeries over the years. '83, '86, '01. Tried several brands of glucosomine, but the one that has worked for me is USANA. It also carries an athlete guarantee of one million dollars that it doesn't have any banned substances in it. I'm now a distributor for the company too. Let me know if you're interested.

I can carry my kids up or down the stairs again!

Try yoga, swimming, aquarunning and weights. It keeps me in shape. Refrain from massage, use cold/hot compress and check it with an accupuncturist/ physical theraphist. Take proper nutrients.

Maybe you have a sprain or something, but remember not everyone's body can handle a marathon.
