A user who was trying to "hide" personal documents on a Windows XP system by burying them deep in the computer's folder structure received an error message when performing a mandated (and automated with a script) backup of local data to a company data file server. The problem was a path that was too long (Windows lets you create a path that's too long, but you won't be able to get to the files that reside at the bottom of the path, after the maximum size is exceeded). What's the maximum size of a path?

No no! it means ur LAN network speed it too low. There is no limitations of path. Take backup at the time when server and network is free, one other way is first backup the data on nearest computer(1) to server then skip 5-10 systems and copy the data from (1) to (11) then 11 to 20 as u say. but the problem is Ur LAN speed not the path. Use Ping utility if u really in trouble ;)
open cmd type ping "server ip" /t without quotes..

hello
for window XP character limit is 256 but when the file length is more than 256 character the file can not be copied or deleted to solve this problem, long path tool can be used.
