Here are some tips on how to control an infestation and rid your home of fleas, flea eggs, larvae and coccooned larvae.

1. Get 3 days worth of capstar from your vet for every animal in your house. Give 1 to each animal today.
2. Get some Frontline from your vet for each animal. Apply it today.
3. Continue to give the capstar once daily to each pet, until gone. (this will kill all the fleas on your dog for 3 days while the frontline starts to work and completely active).
4. Wash all pet bedding in hot water every 7-11 days. What you can't wash - you will need to treat.
5. Vacuum - under cushions, under tables, baseboards, anyplace the dog likes to sleep or lay. Get the bag out of the house and into the dumpster. Repeat every 7-11 days.
6. Treat the house and unwashable pet beds with premise spray (bombs do not work!). I like Knockout spray, but whatever you get, make sure it has an adulticide and an IGR (insect growth regulator - birth control for fleas). If your pet(s) like to lay in certain areas, then spray in a 3 feet radius (the distance fleas travel) around the area. Do this every 7-11 days.
7. Treat your pets every 3 weeks with Frontline for at least 3 treatments, then once every month.
8. The yard? Treat shaded areas (flea larvae don't like light) your pet likes to lay/visit with the premise spray every 7-11 days until the second killing frost (if you have one). Fleas live on dogs, not out in your yard. You may have eggs or cocooned flea larvae in your yard, but they are impermeable to pesticides, so treat after mowing your yard (the vibrations stimulates them to hatch out)

Be sure all pets in the house are treated -- any untreated pet acts as a source of reinfestation.

Ticks are a different story and it depends on where you live. Keep your pet away from wildlife infested areas as this is where your pet will pick up most ticks. To kill ticks, you would use Knockout on the yard. You many want to opt for using Advantix on your pet rather then Frontline if you live in a highly tick infested area. Advantix is better at repelling ticks than Frontline (the tick would actually have to be on your dog to be killed with Frontline). If you decide to use Advantix, apply every 4 weeks instead of 3 due to the use of pyrethrins.

Tick and fleas collars are unreliable -they will only prevent/kill ticks on the head and neck area, not necessarily on the other end. Unless you want to make tick bracelets and belts and tail scrunchies. LOL.

Fleas are very annoying! Always use either Frontline or Advantix for Canines on your dog every month. I've found that if you don't do it to the month exactly, the fleas return. But to get to the source, try this:
1. While your dog is away (like at the vet or groomers or you can take him to a friend's house) clean everything that your dog touches. Wash his bed, your bed, any sheets he touches, etc. Use bleach if you can.
2. Then get some anti-flea carpet powder and vaccum your carpet. Surprisingly fleas can live in you carpet for weeks! They can also lay their eggs there and the little ones can hatch and jump onto your dog.
3. Spray any fabric in your home (couches, beds, etc) with a flea killing spray. You can buy these at Wal-Mart or target for pretty cheap.
4. Also spray your pet's bed and your's very well.
5. Bring your pet home and put the Frontline on him. This should kill all the fleas at every life stage and in any place they may be hiding.
If you still see fleas after this, try it again. There might be something you missed.
Hope this helps!

Frontline on ALL dogs and cats in a household, plus periodic treatment of the house itself (my vet carries a product called Knockout Spray that is fantastic) will help control fleas and ticks in an indoor environment.

Outdoors, it is nearly (if not totally) impossible to control/eradicate them. There are pesticide companies that will come and spray your yard... but do you want your kids or pets walking in and breathing all those chemicals? You could pave your yard with cement (just kidding). They are such well adapted parasites that I don't think is it possible to remove them from the environment... sorry :-(

Getting rid of ticks and fleas in the environment may be difficult. You can have your yard sprayed regularly by a pest control company. But, that may not be good for your dogs, kids or even you. The following website has alternative treatments for pests. You might get some useful information. Good luck.

You do not have fleas if you are using the right flea/tick medicine on your dogs. You couldn't have any in your home. They have to use the dogs as a host. If you are treating your dogs then they have no way of entering the house.

If you think you have them in your yard, so what? As long as your dogs are not bothered by them. You could call an exterminator or talk to someone at a home improvement store about what you could do yourself. I just don't see any use in it myself.

Hm well we use frontline on our dog as well as a flea and tick collar we get from our vets I forgot the name. So far I think our dog has had one tick but it wasnt attached and he's been with us for almost 8 years. Also you can check his fur as well with a flea and tick comb.

yeh frontline is just to stall the ticks and fleas.... I think i took my dog to a vet or a dog salon for her to take a dip. If your dog gets bit in a spot and it starts bleeding, put neosporin on it. They usually go 4 the tail. As soon as the dog bleed they will keep on itching and irritating the spot making it worse and tearing through the skin! please be aware of this!
