Practice makes perfect. Don't put too much pressure on yourself, but set small goals. Decide to talk to one new person each day. You don't have to say much - just compliment the person on their hair, sweatshirt, or shoes or something. Maybe ask them how they did on a math test, or what they think of a teacher. Try to just do this once a day. It might not come out right the first few times, but just keep at it once each day. Eventually, you will feel really comfortable starting conversations. You will start to realize that a lot of people feel shy and nervous just like you once did.

Another thing you can do is smile. When you smile at someone, that person's guard comes down, and people will instantly become open to becoming your friends.

Remember that most people who feel shy and nervous when they are young feel much more confident as they grow older. You will, too. I used to be so extremely shy, and really feared public speaking. Now, I can go up to anyone and start a conversation. Plus, I just won an award from my law school for my oral advocacy skills! I never would have dreamed in jr. high school that I would win anything related to speaking! I was always so scared and nervous!

This is going to sound weird but it worked for me. Start trying to make friends with people who don't matter to you much. Like, turn around and talk to that kid who it kinda weird in history class. Don't talk to people who you will feel like there will be a huge pressure on you to seem impressive to them.

To start off conversations, just ask them what kind of music they are into or something like that. Like if they are wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt ask them what other bands they like, that sort of thing. Don't start conversations with jokes that sound either forced, and don't start conversations with the opposite sex that start with jokes, especially if you are a guy. Because even though people tell you this is an easy way to start a conversation and takes pressure off, I always find it creepy and weird and the person who did it sort of annoying.

Good luck.

Sounds like me when I was in highschool. Man in order to get rid of that you just got to speak to anybody, and jsut think taht they are teh same as you. They might even like your ideas. Do not be shy to speak what's on your mind, because that is teh only way people will know what you want. If you go to college just think about the class taht you need to take. SPEECH!!! You have to go in front of the class, and talk to everybody about any topic. Anyways I am sure you will do fine. Just don't think that because you are not popular people might not like you, because at the end you might end up being the popular one just like it happened to me. Good luck!!

my character is exactly like u. i'm shy whenever it comes to making new friends and i'm the type that only clicks well with a certain type of people. nonetheless, i've still managed to make quite a number of friends...so my suggestion is : be yourself. if u don't want to make the first approach, then wait for people to approach you.

oh, no... why to? it is good to be shy, don't loose it too fast, that's a treasure - when someone realised it he/she already lost it...
