Yes, you do. You need at the bare minimum a birth certificate to prove your Canadian citizenship and a driver's license for your photo ID, if you're crossing over into the USA from Canada by car.
In about a year or so, you'll need a valid passport (no exceptions) to cross over into the USA from Canada by car. Already, if you cross over into the USA from Canada by any other means then a car you MUST have a valid passport or you will be denied entry.
Clarification if you missed it:
It is still acceptable to cross over into the USA from Canada by car with just a Canadian birth certificate and a driver's license. If you cross over into the USA from Canada by any other means (like air or sea) though you MUST have a valid passport with you or you will be denied.
In January 2008 you will need to have a passport on you (for all means of transportation into the USA from Canada) or you will be denied. Canadian officials are trying to get the USA to bump that deadline back and I think all of that is still up in the air right now.
If you aren't going to be travelling to the USA from Canada this year (by air or sea) then I wouldn't recommend applying for a passport right now. Canada's passport offices are overwhelmed right now because everybody and their brother is applying for a passport these days. Wait until this latest influx of applications is processed and then apply. Good luck!

You need picture ID such as a current drivers license and an original birth certificate (not a photocopy) to prove your citizenship. If you have a passport, that will also do. (altho by car you do not officially "need" a passport until January 2008 at the earliest)

you will need a Birth cerfificate and a driver's license. Also as of JAnuary 1 2008 you will need a passport. A passport is the best but the lines to get one right now are insane.

Yeah, get a passport now if you don't have one beacuse you're gonna need it. I thought it started Jan 1 though.
