I want to take sharp shots in a gym which has low light. I bump up my ISO level to the highest (1600), I try and use the built in flash, and I try to get as close as I can to the action, and yet my pictures come out really poor like blurs, redish tint, low light areas, etc. I did try taking it all in RAW format but I do not have the time to edit all my pictures.

My question is, is Canons 28-55mm kit lens slower than normal lens (compared to other Canon f/3.5), and do I need to purchase lens with IS and a external flash unit. (I have a Canon Rebel XTi)

The 28-55mm kit lens is an average quality, everyday lens for casual shooting, definitely not optimal for what you're trying to do. All f/3.5 lenses allow the same amount of light into the lens, so that's not it either. ISO 1600 will certainly allow you to shoot at faster shutter speeds, but you'll pay a price in significant noise (although you may be able to fix it with software like Noise Ninja). IS won't help because it basically allows you to shoot longer exposures of still images without blurring, but at a sports event, there will be considerably more motion during that longer exposure, so everything will be blurrier no matter how still the lens is!

No, if you really want high quality shots under those conditions, your best bet is to get close with a fast lens and a high end flash with a high maximum guide number (like the Speedlite 580EX). To compensate for the inevitable nasty lighting in gyms, get a white card and set the white balance manually before you start. With all that, you should be able to drop your ISO setting to 400 or lower, which will also give you much cleaner shots. But plan to spend more than the cost of your camera for the required upgrades and accessories!

The "rule of thirds" is in uncomplicated terms a gadget you utilize till you boost your very own type of composition. Composition consists of the two the lining shapes and the colour layout. That reported, merely bypass out and seem on the photos printed via SI and different activities magazines. based upon the sport, you will locate distinctive focal length lenses paintings extra useful than others. Take what lenses you have and then decide for which one (or ones) is going to offer you the coverage you pick. in certainty long, speedy lenses are the guideline while shooting maximum activities. you're able to would desire to compromise some while utilising your lenses because of the fact i do no longer think of you very own a 400mm f/2.8 lens (of of the coolest fee lenses favored for shooting activities via the pros).
