Is it only objects with tinfoil on circular rims such as jars that can cause the electrical sparks?

This reminds me of middle school. When it was "cool" for people to save potato chip bags, nuke them in the microwave for a few seconds. It was pretty cool.
They'd shrink up and spark. And they made great keychains...or so I thought when i was in middle school.

But to answer your question, all metal objects will spark. Some to lesser degrees than others.
Like if you're trying to soften a frozen stick of butter in the microwave...take the wrapper off...I once set off fireworks in my microwave because of that dumb wrapper.

It's too small. Small amounts of metal are OK in the microwave, the problem comes when people want to put their metal pots and pan inside.

Microwaves use magnets to heat your food from the inside out. These magnetic waves cause the metals atoms to re-arrange. Hence the spark.
