you know what, they are really cute to look at but are not very smart and are renowned for their tempermental problems. But each to his own.

I don't know where "doofynic" gets her answer for this one from? I have two Maltese pups. They are brothers with the same parents, different litters.
She said they are not smart and have temperment problems. That could not be be more incorrect. They love every person and every animal they come in contact with. They are so intelligent it is uncanny. They let you know what they want by telling you by barking or making strange noises.
They are very entertaining and lovable. The thing I noticed and would never have believed about them is they DO NOT CHEW things. They have never chewed up one thing in my house. When they are finished with their toys they pick them up and put them in their toy box or in their dog bed. I didn't have anything to do with that training. They do it on their own. You can talk to them as you would a child and they listen.
They can be VERY stubborn. My Joseph was outside and I wanted him to come in and he wouldn't. I called and he sat 3 feet away from me and refused to enter the house. I yelled and he just sat there almost shaking his head no. They always look like they are smiling/laughing too.
They are just a lot of fun to be around. You are entertained just being with them. Besides the fact they do not chew, the other good thing is you don't have to get up with them. If you sleep, they sleep. They are not morning people. I have never crated either one of them. I never had a need to...........Get a Maltese. You will not be sorry...............I loved the first one so much, I had to have another one............Their fur is like silk to feel. They don't get their "real" fur until about 6 months old. They don't shed and they never have a doggy smell, even if they get wet or dirty. Mine are groomed every five weeks. In between I bathe them and comb them out. They don't get matted or nasty like some of the other breeds do. My baby pup holds his butt up in the air so I wash it. They don't like to be dirty.

okay, i used think that all malteses would be yappy and i wouldn't like toby at all... but that's not how it turned out. We gave him the teddy bear cut and he is the most adorable thing. He's not yappy unless we allow him to be. He's SO friggin smart. He loves more than anything to play play play. He's just part of the family. I don't like when people give them long-haired cuts but the teddy bear cut is adorable. they're just such good dogs, seriously. --- also my mom is a long time deathly allergic person to dogs. she is never allergic to toby as long as we drop him off at the groomer once every two months. it's having them dirty that makes people allergic.

I have two maltese x shih tzus that are great little guys in the family. They're friendly and are fine with people and our two cats. They also don't need as much exercise as some of the bigger guys. And despite their size, mine are great little guard dogs! :) They're kind of like a good "all round" dog.

You should =) I got mine on January 1st, 5 days ago and he's adorable! When he came in the house, all he knew was how pee (most of the time) on the newspaper. Now he knows poop, also, and is still trying! They're all generally lovable and quite intelligent for a small/toy breed.

Since I don't know what you are like, your personality, your activities, your lifestyle, it would be completely impossible to recommend any breed.
