My 9 month old dog has two main problems that I can't figure out how to deal with:
1) His house breaking. Even though I feed him twice a day, he'll still go potty in the house long after his previous feeding. He also will not go the entire time we leave him alone, and then as soon as we walk in the room, he goes to the bathroom.
2) He tears up paper. I have that sour apple stuff that I've sprayed on pretty much everything else so he doesn't chew that. But anything paper within reach, he tears up.
Help?

get a crate and crate train him. that way you can take him directly outside and he won't have the chance to potty when you come back. when he does go potty make sure you're out there with him and praise the heck out of him after he's finished. if you praise while he's going potty he might stop and finish inside. after you take him after feeding and he does potty, bring him in and as long as you can directly observe him, leave him out. as soon as you need to do something else crate him. let him out right before bed and make sure he goes and then crate him at night, until he is housebroekn also will keep him from tearing up paper while you're gone. everytime you see him going at paper walk over and take the paper away and say NO in a firm but not angry or loud voice. and then make him sit. and try to keep paper out of his reach to cut down on how many times you have to correct him.

He is showing you that he is mad at you when he does that right in front of you. There are a few solution that should save your paper too -

A - Crate train him. Buy a crate that for his size will allow him only enough room to stand up, turn around, and lay back down. He will use the bathroom once or twice at first, but dogs Hate to have to deal with their own waste and he will knock it off out of necessity. Crate training will save your papers because ge won't be able to get at them. I have a dog that is now 4, and she used to wreck my apartment when I left her alone, as well as pee and crap on my bed. We crate trained her in about a week and now she will leave things alone when we forget and leave her out.

B - If you can't get a crate for him, lock him in your bathroom. The room is small, and the floor easy to clean. Its a bit more room so the accidents may keep up for a bit and you will definately want to put your toilet paper out of reach. Your major concern with this is the scratching he may do at the door or the digging on the floor - depending on your dog, this could pose a problem.

C - Get him a post, a chain, and a doghouse for outside. I no longer live in an apartment, and with my backyard, I have found a system that my dogs like very much. When I go to work, the dogs go outside on the chain - they have food and water available and a doghouse in case it rains while I am gone. When I come home, they come inside. This has almost completely eliminated the accidents in the house, and the dogs like being able to watch the neighborhood and gaurd the house while I am gone.

About 15 minutes after he eats you should take him out and STAY WITH HIM until you see he's gone.Play with him.The more he moves the faster he'll go potty.
A long walk before you leave him alone will make certain that he's empty and as soon as you get home you need to call the dog to the door as soon as you open it to go outside and again keep him out until you see him go.And make sure he does ALL of his buisness not just part of it unless you're planning on taking him out again to play real soon.
As far as the paper thing keep paper out of his reach and he won't tear it up.
If you're leaving paper for him to potty on while you're gone then leave something else for him to chew on that's more interesting than the paper is.Kongs stuffed with peanut butter or rawhide or a bone from the butcher shop.Treat balls can be filled with crap dog food like Kibbles and Bits. And if you'd take him for a good run before you leave him he'll lay down and sleep.
In my house the rule of thumb is this.........If the dog does'nt lay down for at least a 2 hr.nap after a walk then it was'nt long enough.
I'm lucky in that there's a dog park 3.5 miles away where they can run off leash. They go for at least 45 minutes BEFORE I go to work and if I don't feel like taking them for a walk around the neighborhood when I get home they go again for another 45 minutes.

My dog had the same problems. You should make a sound at him like ehhhh then immediately take him outside while he is peeing tis may sound wierdbut it should work. Try to get the paper away from him. When he tears paper apart put him in is cage and say no firmly. . I recommend a dog training video for him. Or a book could work. For a few months, you should praise your dog every time he potties outside and give him a small treat. Thus he will learn that pottying outside is more rewarding.

Crate training is an excellent way to keep doggies out of trouble when you cannot watch them. It will help finalize that house training and keep him away from papers. A lot of dogs love tearing up paper. Have you considered putting the papers out of his reach?

He is still a baby and can't always understand.

No dog pees in the house because he is mad at you. Dogs love pee and poop. It is more like he is leaving you a love letter, he just doesn't understand that you don't like it.

Perhaps he is leaking when you come back into the house out of excitement? A lot of young dogs do excitement urination. Try to stay calm and just take him outside. Punishing excitement urination only makes it worse. If you stay calm and ignore it, he can learn to stay calm himself. Clean up urine with enzyme product or white vinegar and water.

Reward him when he potties outside.

Dogs usually have to use the bathroom 10-15 minutes after they are done eating. Start paying attention to your dog for a while as he eats his meals and once you notice that your dog is done, you should then take the dog to where you whould like him to use the bathroom. Dont waste your time or money on dog urine spray scents. The best way to get your dog to use the bathroom in spefic areas is to take a sample of his own urine(as nasty as it sounds) on a newspaper and place it in the spots where you would like your dog to go. It may take a while for your dog to go but just be patient and once he does go make sure you give him praises and hugs.

Dont get too aggrivated with your dog because sometimes it takes a while and you must be consistant with your training. If your dog goes in a spot where they arent supposed to go then you should bring your dog to where they used the bathroom, place their nose down slightly towards the dog mess and in a stern voice say "NO"...maybe repeat it once more. Your dog will catch on soon.

To get your dog to stop chewing on paper you should get a old newspaper and some mace(ask your mailman for a can), and litely spray the paper with mace and leave it laying around. Your dog will see that paper and think its playtime, but once he gets a smell of that mace on the paper I garuntee you your doggy wont even bother it. Dogs hate the scent of mace and they would just rather stay completely away. Start doing that with some of your old papers and soon your dog will associate that bad smell with every piece of paper he comes across.

I suggest that you start buying chew toys for your dog. They get bored and need entertainment just like us humans. I think the big chew ropes for dogs are the best. It takes them forever to chew the hell out of that big rope and it keeps them entertained for hours.

Good Luck!

In my abode, a dominance challenge would not ensue each of the time. a practise challenge is something that takes position extra typically. I easily have 4 canines in my abode, my women (2 of them) are very dominant and they are fixed yet each so many times, they get into it. merely with one yet another. A behaviorial challenge or education challenge will be a canines with problems with you, yet another canines, a cat, each person. My women haven't any problems with my 2 men (also fixed) they merely have their little tifts... about the time they could in all likelihood bypass into warmth, and thats it. also, even as they "argue" with eachother, one lady will you ought to be higher and stand over my different lady yet one quick look from me will end all of it. Thats it. they don't look to be food aggressive, not toy aggressive and do not snap for any reason. and also you're perfect, maximum folk of issues actual are led to by teaching subject matters. Mine are very well educated canines, a million is a narcotics detection, 2 are search for and Rescue canines and one is only a settee potato, so my education must be firstclass. both women are German Shepherds, one male is a German Shepherd and the different is a Border Collie/ Beagle mix.
