I had taken a beginners class of Mandarin my first year of college and got through it pretty well at the age of 17 with no continuation of it afterwards.I am now 22, I speak English (native) and Turkish (both fluently), I plan to spend the next three summers in Beijing whilst studying Mandarin in the States. How long do you think it would take me to learn to speak fluent Mandarin and also to write proficiently? Thank you.

I'm not good in English, but I'll try my best to enable you to understand what I mean.

No matter what language we learn, i think, environment is the most important factor. You said that you will study Mandarin in Beijing, so I assume that if you study hard and keep open-minded to learn everything, speaking fluent Mandarin is possible in few month.
But, I'm not so sure about writting. Chinese character is very complicated, maybe writting proficiently needs few years.

Anyway, good luck to you.

To speak fluently I think you will be able to accomplish after staying there for three summers. But writing proficiently, you need more than that. I don't know about your level of vocab at the moment, but I should say, if you do not do other work just concentrate on reading and practising your writing skill, during this three years, you might be considered as O.K. as a foreigner.

I am not too sure what you mean by "writing proficiently". If you mean just to be able to write letters in Mandarin or simple stories I think it is not impossible.

But if you mean by "to write proficiency" is like for instance a journalist or book writer, there is a possibility if you spend enough time everyday for three years. That is also depending on what subject you are thinking of writing.
If it is on general subjects or daily life experiences, I am sure that will be sufficient. Anyway, do a lot of reading to practise, because you realize that the sentence construction in Mandarin are different from English.

Japanese is better for business trade in the short run because America already does a lot of business with the Japanese, but China is rising in wealth and manufacturing and has been for quite some time, so in the long run Mandarin would be more useful. The Japanese written language is easier to learn than the Mandarin written language.

I'll advise better u should join some other city rather than Beijing as in beijing most of people speak english so again u'll go in same env. but if u'll go some rular or urban or small city so u'll get good environment.............i think at least u need 1 year in fact it depend on ur learning ability.
